Spring, the season of flowers and fat raindrops and new SOLDIER recruits and the Cactaur's annual mating ritual in full bloom.
But not all the Cactaurs were prancing about with their pins stretched out and gleaming in the sunlight– no, for one Cactaur, the mating ritual was a lonely, difficult affair that was merely a valley to grimly forge through to get to the rest of the year (especially summer with the sweet fruit on the low-lying bushes). She had no mate to run through the sands with, no partner to call her own. She spent her days trudging across the dunes while the others frolicked in semi-illicet fun.
Her days were long and lonely, until she saw– him.
Oh, but he was perfect! Dark hair, bright eyes, clearly capable of defending himself as noted by the large sword lying next to his rather prone form. Even in sleep, as he was drifting in his dreams under the warm afternoon sun, he was completely perfect in every way. Surely she would not have to spend another Spring alone, not with him here!
Pleased, and hoping that no others noticed the wonderful speciman lounging before her vision, she skipped up to his body to take note of the even, rhythmic breathing. She could just imagine his beautiful eyes looking with devotion upon her. They could even prance through the dunes like the others, anticipating the arrival of the Summer without the pang of longing she usually possessed. Ah, the world was wonderful once more!
She scampered up his uniform front (and very nearly fell over when she felt what perfectly toned muscles he had beneath the fabric) and planted a kiss right on his lips, to signal that she had chosen him.
A few yards away, the guard looked up momentarily in confusion, wondering what could have prompted the anguished shriek of pain that was echoing through the air.
