Angelo looked lost without Rinoa. His mistress was still comatose. She could not feed him, or pet him, or play with him.
The junior students at Balamb Garden loved Angelo, perhaps a bit too much. They seemed so distracted by the big, beautiful dog who wandered around the corridors and classroom, that the instructors had a hard time keeping their attention.
Quistis did not envy the instructors. Only a short time ago, she would have been standing at the front of the classroom, shooing away the dog and calling for order in the room. Instead, she agreed to help keep Angelo out of the way.
“Come on, let’s play fetch!” Selphie gathered the Orphanage Gang at the Quad, bringing Angelo with her. The SeeDs tossed the ball to Angelo, who caught it mid-air and returned it to its pitcher.
“Ball,” Selphie asked Angelo to release the ball from his jaws. When the dog dropped the saliva-coated ball into her hand, she cooed, “Good boy! Okay, Quistis, your turn!”
Quistis never had a pet. Angelo made her a little nervous, although she knew she shouldn’t be. Angelo was a good dog, a well-behaved dog. He didn’t bite, unless his mistress was in danger.
Quistis tossed the slightly slimy rubber ball, and Angelo took off like a rocket to retrieve it. The dog caught it, and ran back to Quistis.
“Ball,” Quistis said to Angelo. Angelo did not let go of the ball.
“Ball, please,” Quistis tried again, holding out her hand under the dog’s jaw.
Instead, Angelo reared up on his hind legs, and right as it let go of the ball, gave Quistis a sloppy lick across the face. His tongue almost knocked the glasses off her face.
The SeeDs howled in laughter.
“Looks like you’ve got another Trepie!” Zell held his knees, doubled over in a fit of laughter.
Quistis straightened the glasses on the bridge of her nose, her face pink.
FFVIII: Quistis/Angelo
