FINAL FANTASY KISS BATTLE 2021!

HELLO FRIENDS????? Remember those fandoms we all used to be in? and producing things for? Well, baby, it's time for a nostalgia run, so buckle up your chocobos and get ready to roll. We haven't done a Kiss Battle in years and lassarina and I for one think it's TIME TO DO SO.

This event is open to everyone, even if we aren't DW circlefriends! (feel free to friend me too; i promise i'm not crazy that's a lie). If you aren't on DW, you can still play via anon or OpenID!

The Kiss Battle is simple. Players leave prompts in comments under each specific fandom, using generalized fandom nomenclature: a relationship of some sort, and a concept to inspire other players.

• For romantic relationship kisses, we use X / Y
• For platonic relationship kisses, we use X & Y
• Absolutely open to relationships with more than 2 people involved! X / Y / Z (/ A / B ...) welcome to this party!
• Prompts can be a word, a sentence, an image, a song lyric; it's a suggestion, rather than a request
• it's a kiss battle! there will be smooches!

Players then go looking for smoochin' prompts they'd like to fill. Fills can be fic, art, interpretive dance, whatever you're inspired to; they can be filled in a responding comment, or as a link (to AO3, tumblr, etc). FILLS GOTTA HAVE A KISS IN 'EM. IT'S A KISS BATTLE. What counts as a "kiss" is up to you, though -- you can be creative!

• Fills should use the comment header to let people know what the fill is; please use a format like "X / Y, (title), (rating), (any content warnings that might apply)"

• Prompts can be filled multiple times! Don't worry if someone got there first; we love Two Cakes up in this event! The more kisses we get, the better!

It's a very simple game, and is meant to be played in good faith without anybody being a shitbag about pairings or characters. We're all too old for this.

After everyone has gone to sleep, Lulu finds him lingering outside the temple.

“‘You don’t know what it’s like’?”

There’s a single perfectly arched brow arching even higher, skepticism and unkind bewilderment making her voice more severe than it already is.

“That was…” He trails off.

“You don’t have to tell me.”

Maybe she shouldn’t be so gentle with him, but he’s grieving; she can’t add to it. Wakka found gentleness, after all, and managed to let go of his anger. She ought to be able to do the same. But those words bounce around in her mind, the audacity incensing her - you don’t know what it’s like.

Luzzu, standing there, telling them that they don’t know loss.

Her eyelids flicker, just so, and she continues, because it’s clear he won’t.

“We all grew up together. Wakka, Chappu, Yuna, Gatta, Botta, Keepa -- myself, and - you, Luzzu. Our little island never had much defense. We all lost brothers, friends, and parents.”

He endures her little spiel, eyes to the ground. Is he ashamed, contrite? Or does he wish he was anywhere else right now?

Still, she keeps going. “You’re alive. So make something of it.”

He takes a knee, trembling despite the temple’s electricity warming the ground around them. Maybe he just can’t stand anymore. She doesn’t give him the grace of turning a blind eye to his anguish.

“Hm. You really are a weak man, aren’t you?”

He finally answers her, doesn’t hesitate. “Yes.”

Luzzu reaches for her hands. She doesn’t pull away, even though she wants to. She doesn’t want to be the one who has to offer him absolution after Wakka already did - offended, perhaps, on her long-time friend’s behalf that he wouldn’t be enough -

But it’s Luzzu, who she’s known just as long -

His lips, ice-cold, touch her knuckles as her fingers fold about his. She touches his face, feels the ridge of bone under his eye, cradles his jaw.

Something she thought long dead rises like a tide within her.

Neither of them go inside for a long time.

Oh, this is magnificent! You've captured Lulu's character perfectly--her icy demeanor, and the pain and anger that simmers just beneath. And Luzzu, so broken, an idealistic--perhaps even foolhardy--man brought to his knees, literally, by grief, is wonderfully written.

She doesn’t give him the grace of turning a blind eye to his anguish. - God, I love that line!

I also love that Luzzu doesn't try to argue with Lulu, and even admits that he is weak. And that kiss! One of deference, a plea for mercy and understanding that manages to touch Lulu even amid her anger and grief. So, so lovely. Thank you for filling this prompt! 💕

like. i love the raw tension you fit into such a tight space; i love the implied contrast between how Wakka handled this and how Lulu did, how different they are, leading up to such an unexpected & lovely conclusion—this was great, thank you for posting

The line "You're alive. So make something of it" feels so much like Lulu that I felt it in my bones, holy hell. Such a good piece. Lulu/Luzzu would be such an angst fest of a pairing, I love it.

mmmmm, yes, Lulu's distance and Luzzu's fracturing and the way it's intertwined with their childhood, and with Wakka, and the anger and sorrow wrapped in ice--YES.

Auron is sitting outside, quietly, his legs crossed. Behind him the forest stretches out, full of its strange and wonderful sounds, and the others rest. But he cannot rest; existence has become too dark and empty to continue like this, too much like death. He needs to feel something, something that is not gentle.

Lulu's voice is quiet and soft behind him. "You're sure about this?" she asks.

Auron takes a moment to breathe - he doesn't need to, but it helps to remind him of why he's doing this. He has already set his coat and sword aside, along with the sake jug - no need to risk damaging any of his possessions in this folly. "Yes. I am."

"You remember what to say if you want me to stop?"

One word - the place where his dreams had first died. "I remember."

"All right." She kisses him gently on the temple before she steps back - a reminder of how she regards him, outside of this. It's appreciated, although he already knows. He braces, preparing himself.

The sudden, careful lash of flame against him - hot enough to hurt, brief enough to not cause any major damage - makes him cry out, makes him feel alive again.

Ohhh, yes. Being an unsent must be its own kind of hell, and I love how you described Auron's numbness. And I especially love that moment of tenderness from Lulu before she begins, hinting at a relationship between them that goes beyond friendship and superficial romance, to a kind of care and understanding of the other's pain and needs, and a willingness on Lulu's part to help him deal with his, by whatever means necessary.

A lovely bittersweet scene. Thank you for writing this!
