Kain had been standing on Golbez's right for a few hours. There was plenty for him to do, but per the usurper's request, he was to stand by his side as he planned for Cecil's entry into Zot. Golbez had seemed pleased by Kain's suggestion to have Cecil bring the crystal to them, but nonetheless made contingency plans in the case that Cecil failed. However, the benefits to providing Golbez with a great solution were short lived, and he was back to forcing Kain to accomplish his tasks in the dead of night, only allowing the dragoon two hours of sleep each night.
Kain supposed it had to do with the hold Golbez had on his mind. It was easier to break his resolve when Kain was sleep deprived, unable to think clearly or to react quickly. At last the preparations were complete for the day. Kain found himself raising and lowering one heel at a time for reprieve. Any moment now, Golbez will dismiss Kain.
When the last servant left the top floor, the door shutting behind her as she descended the stairs, Golbez stood from his desk and stretched his arms behind his back. The magic words Kain yearned for did not come. Golbez turned and took off his helmet.
He'd seen Golbez's face before. Like Cecil, snow white hair spilled over his shoulders, a stark contrast to his dark armor. Unlike Cecil, his face was all sharp angles, his eyes cold and disconnected, and when his eyes met Kain's, he felt as though Golbez did not see a person before him, as though he regarded Kain as a mere object.
"You've been visiting our prisoner far more than necessary to keep her alive," Golbez said.
The last time Kain had lied to him, Kain had lost use of his right arm, with promises of worse treatment to his left if he did it again. There was some remaining damage in his shoulder, and Kain worried it would be permanent.
"Yes," Kain said simply, keeping his eyes forward.
Golbez leaned back on his desk.
"You feel the same for her as Cecil, am I correct?" Golbez asked, knowing the answer.
Kain said nothing. Golbez could hear his thoughts anyways.
"You'd take everything if you could, wouldn't you?" Golbez asked, removing Kain's helmet.
Kain's breath hitched, unsure where the conversation was going. The machinery of the tower whirred silently beneath his feet, sending vibrations up his legs.
"After all," Golbez said, his eyes flickering across Kain's face, his hand reaching out for him, "I don't control you. I merely take away your restraint. Your desires do the rest."
Golbez yanked Kain's ponytail down, making Kain tilt his head up as Golbez stood. Kain was tall, usually towering over everyone else. It was disconcerting to see Golbez standing over him, to see him crane his neck down to meet Kain's eyes. Golbez stepped closer, his chest plate bumping Kain's. Kain hoped Golbez wouldn't feel his heartbeat racing through the armor.
Kain's eyes watered as Golbez pulled harder, worried he would tear his hair outright from his scalp. With the unshed tears blurring his vision, it was almost as if he were looking at Cecil instead.
The familiar sensations Golbez's magic washed over Kain. Invisible mosquitos brushed against his skin, causing him to itch and anticipate sharp bites. It made Kain's skin crawl. Kain shuddered as all other thoughts washed away, leaving only those prompted by his own wants. And those thoughts concerned him, because it meant Golbez knew of them, too.
"Tell me what you want," Golbez said.
Kain swallowed, his mouth dry. Golbez had asked him if Kain shared the same feelings for Rosa that Cecil did, but he now realized there was a different interpretation to the question: did he feel the same for Rosa as he felt for Cecil?
The answer was still yes.
"I--I want to kiss you," Kain whispered, willing the tears to stay where they were, so he could keep Cecil in sight and not Golbez.
Golbez studied Kain quietly. After an eternity, Golbez bent down, his lips meeting Kain's. Kain's arms snaked around Golbez's back, pulling him closer despite the wide armor. Kain wriggled, shifting himself until they fit together somewhat across the rigid chestpieces like a poorly made jigsaw. Golbez matched Kain's fervor, yanking Kain's hair again until Kain parted his lips and granted Golbez entry.
Kain moaned as Golbez explored his mouth, shutting his eyes as heat flooded his body. His hips started to move and he cursed that he was in hard armor and the motions did nothing. His mind whispered that Rosa was only a floor away, and this was his one opportunity to be with her and Cecil both. Golbez pulled away suddenly, leaving Kain gasping for air and ready to pull him back. Thankfully, Kain remembered who he was with. He froze where he was, catching his breath as Golbez regarded him, this time with a bit more curiosity.
"Fascinating…" Golbez said as he turned to walk away. "I'll leave you to your duties."
Kain considered what just transpired, ashamed that Golbez had seen his most hidden desire; he only hoped Golbez wouldn't use the new information he had about Kain to his advantage.
"And," Golbez said as he opened the door, his helmet back on, "when you're done, you can join me in my quarters."
Kain stood to attention until Golbez left, excitement making his heart beat faster once again.
Surrendering Restraint
