I definitely recommend Sunshine if you are into realistic, scared, pretty-flawed but still-likeable heroines. RMcK is very good at that type, almost such that it's an archetype for her - all of her books are like that. But Sunshine is better. The main character is special, yes, but she's also just circumstantially special, more of the "right place, right time, oh fuck why did this happen to me" type as well.

Sunshine's terrified of herself, of what she got into, and the way that she talks herself through it and - yes, in the end, becomes an actual hero - is really some of the best storytelling ever. Yeah, she's whiny. Yeah, she's scared. But that makes it better to read about her. I mean, she makes mistakes! I GUESS HEROINES AREN'T SUPPOSED TO DO THAT. Or something.

Anyway, do you recall what other RMcK book you read? To me, at least, Sunshine is quite different than the others, so I still recommend giving it a try.
