My mum came out of her surgery fine yesterday, but she is going to be in a lot of pain for the next couple weeks as her throat heals. She can barely talk -- she croak-whispered an "I love you" into the phone last night, but that was all. Please send her some good thoughts and warm wishes.

In other, more cheerful news, I've been looking into 5Ks! [livejournal.com profile] jennyclarinet and [livejournal.com profile] hilldo know this! I know that [livejournal.com profile] katmillia and [livejournal.com profile] darcenciel have both expressed interest in running a race like this -- is any particular month better/worse for you guys?

Apparently it si hard to find races in Ohio!

This is the first one I found. It's the "Star Trax 5K Night Run", in Salem OH. I thought hey! how cool! a 5K at night! It's apparently a certified candle-lit course. The run would be Saturday, 08/01/2009, and starts at 9:00pm.

The bad news is, Salem is about 1:20 away from where I actually live... a bit far for a race? I mean, I'd do it, because y'know, candlelight and all that. but still.

The next one I found is in Solon, OH, which is closer to me. It's called the "Yates 5K" and the proceeds from the race go towards the ALS Chapter in Ohio. The race is Sunday, 06/07/2009 and starts at 8:30 am.

There is a Rocky River Nature Center 5K/10K on Saturday, May 16, 2009. I like this date because my birthday is May 03, and how awesome would it be for me to run a 5K for my birthday? I mean, really, that's a goal I can totally get behind. This one's in Cleveland.

And this one is Saturday, May 09, 2009. It sounds like you actually get to run in the Metroparks (Cleveland's awesome state park system), which would be awesome! 9:00am.

This is in Cuyahoga Falls, on September 20th 2009. Cuyahoga Falls is really close to us, so that's cool.

So anyway. Who is still interested? What months are good? Are there any specific causes you guys would like to support or look into?

[identity profile] katmillia.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm interested! I'm probably pulling enough vacation time over to have some personal days or extra vacay days next year that I thought I wouldn't have. The candle-lit one SOUNDS really freaking cool, but that's really close to Otakon, and I'm not sure that getting 2 plane tickets that close together would be a smart move on my part, hee.

But whatever the case, if I went out there, I would probably fly out Thurs night/Fri morning so expect me to mooch off of your guest room for the weekend. ;) I thought that wedding I had was going to interfere, but if it comes down to taking vacation for this or taking vacation for my batshit cousin who can't schedule events that are in any way convenient for family members, this wins. So I'm not even factoring that crap in.

[identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I WOULD TOTALLY HAVE A KATY PARTY FOR YOU HAHAHAHA! You can come whenever you want, even if the best flight you get is at like ass o'clock on Thursday. :)

Do you have anything going on in May? As much as I like the candlelit one, I really like the idea of doing something like this for my birthday (we could set candles up in our yard and have our own "midnight run"... while drunk)

[identity profile] katmillia.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
May is a rough month for me. I have 2 sisters graduating! I will try and figure out what weekends these things are going on, but I CANNOT miss my sisters graduations haha they would kill me and I would feel really guilty.

[identity profile] darcenciel.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the September run sounds fabulous too! And that would be even better for me cause I'll have more vacation then.

[identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
GOOD POINT. I can celebrate my birthday any time, though! BELATED PARTY IN SEPTEMBER Y/Y

[identity profile] katmillia.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha June works, too! If there is anything in June or September, those are probably the best months for me! But don't feel like you HAVE to cater to me, either.

[identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
The September one looks pretty good for everybody. I know there are more runs in this area because I see ads for them all the time -- maybe they aren't posted on the internet yet?

[identity profile] darcenciel.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
XDDDDD all of those look pretty awesome!!! I would be up for any of them. The candle lit one sounds neat but yeah I second Katy about traveling for 2 weekends close together since Otakon is late July.

<3

[identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] hilldo.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe there is also a 5k in good ol Chagrin Falls around blossom time (sunday on memorial day weekend for non-locals).

Obviously I haven't really thought about this much at all since my 'training' just started oh about 3 days ago and I am sure I'm still light years behind you guys who've been doing this longer. It'll give me something to shoot for though.

[identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
There's also the Akron Marathon which has a 5K but I can't find much about it online! D:

Google the "Couch to 5K" program if you want a really good starting point.

[identity profile] jennyclarinet.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh! You're training too? Good for you!!! I think Kurt wants to join in as well.

The Chagrin Falls Blossom Run is, I believe, 5 miles, which, yuck. But maybe.

[identity profile] hilldo.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I started running since I now have a treadmill in the garage. I wouldn't call it training, but I've always been lazy about any kind of cardio workout so this will definitely fill that void.

[identity profile] jennyclarinet.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
That's great. You guys are going to be way ahead of us girls in the race though!

[identity profile] hilldo.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I'll be running as fast as kenyans. Mother nature will be like "slowwwww downnnnn" and I'll say No and kick her in the face with my energy legs.

:P

[identity profile] katmillia.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Was that a MANERGY reference?? If so, +500 win points.

If not, go youtube MANERGY tonight. HAHA. KENYANS.

[identity profile] hilldo.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, I've always found in under "Powerthirst" or whatever, but yes you are right.
You win 400 babies.

[identity profile] katmillia.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
400 BABIES!!!!

GROSS I DON'T LIKE KIDS!!

[identity profile] jennyclarinet.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, those all sound good to me, so we could even do a few of them, and then whenever the out-of-towners can come, we can do that with them too.

I tried the speed interval running last night, and UGH! I felt gross. It kicked my ass so hard. But you know I'm going to be doing it again!

Last week, I forgot my gym bag, which has my indoor shoes, MP3 player and padlock in it. So I had to trust that no one would steal my purse out of my locker, run on the treadmill with my dirty outdoor shoes, and had no music to listen to. But that was the day when I ran on the way to work, so I was glad that I hadn't forgotten any of my shower things or work clothes!

Oh, and here's a little advice: make sure you keep your toenails clipped. On Sunday, I took of my shoe and had a bloody sock. My toenail was actually bleeding! Gross.

[identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com 2008-11-19 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That has happened to me too (the bloody toe thing)! It was really kind of nasty. I think the worst part was that I didn't even really feel it -- how do you not feel your toe bleeding everywhere?

I agree -- if we really do get in shape, we could run a few of them over the course of next year! We'd have actual time goals and milestones and everything! :)

[identity profile] safety-caesars.livejournal.com 2008-11-20 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
OH BOY, running! I will uh... cheer you guys on! XD I don't run unless rabid animals are chasing me. So unless this 5K involves hairy beasts foaming at the mouth, I will be content to sit around on my ass some more XD Good luck to y'all who are actually good to your bodies though!

[identity profile] safety-caesars.livejournal.com 2008-11-20 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh also - I hope your mom gets well soon!! Ick, surgery ;_;

Side note, if you're serious about this you should get in touch with my friend [livejournal.com profile] divka, who is training for a marathon-length race to support finding a cure for Crohn's Disease. She's very good about both the health-blogging don't kill yourself training aspect as well as the social side of supporting worthy causes. Good POC for you, in any case. Tell her I sent you. :-)

[identity profile] drakonlily.livejournal.com 2008-11-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm late on this, but I'm very glad that she's alright. I ... suppose I could try a 5k... and die, but I'll try!
