Fandom: taking back Valentine's Day since 2008!

So last year bottle_of_shine had a Kissing Battle. The last edition is here (EDITED TO ADD: this is the old battle, not the current one!). It was a lot of fun and might be known around FF-fandom circles as the best Meme ever**.

Pretty much everyone I know is stressed about something, too, so this round of the Kiss Meme Battle honestly couldn't have better timing. (I love you guys) This round is about feeling good, it's about love, and it's also about seeing who can write the most kissy drabbles and ficlets in one week!

Final Fantasy Kissing Battle: Valentine's Edition!***

This portion of the rules I borrow from Nay, because she explained it well.

Requirements:
  - Kissing. Of any sort, even if it happens to be platonic. Otherwise known as: gen kisses are okay!
  - Put the fandom and pairing in the header of comments with kiss fic! SERIOUSLY. This makes it 300% easier for people to browse (and for me to compile).
Limitations: above the belt (this isn't about porn) and Final Fantasy only (crossovers are cool).

There are many ways to play! Write kisses and post them as comments. Make a list of requests and hope someone will fill them. Write other people's requests and hope they do the same back. (Requests can be filled more than once.) Find other good kisses and squee! EDIT - You can request anonymously, if you want!

This is about love and feeling good and that kind of stuff so people who are stupid about it will get my steel-toes in their ass. WITH LOVE ♥ ♥ ♥

I'm thinking about a week for this, so whoever writes the most kisses in that time wins!

Jecht didn't even have to turn around to know that he was being watched. "Couldn't sleep?"

"Are you aware that you were singing like a dying chocobo?"

Auron sat down on the log next to him and Jecht shot him a grin. "C'mon, I'm not that bad."

"Yes. You are." Auron scowled into the fire.

Jecht snickered and took another swig of the bottle before offering it to Auron. "Want some?"

Auron glanced sidelong at him with a look that clearly said Jecht was crazy to have asked. "It's late. You should be sleeping. We have a lot of ground to cover tomor-"

Jecht heaved an exaggerated sigh. "You always like this, man? How d'you walk with that thing up your ass?"

Auron did not deign to answer the ridiculous question. This only made Jecht laugh harder.

"Quiet. You're going to wake Braska."

"Hey, man, f'my singin' didn't wake him..."

"I put a Sleep spell on him. If you aren't going to sleep, you at least will not deprive him of his own rest. But it won't last too long."

"So cast a Haste on me tomorrow and I'll be as chipper as a squirrel on crack."

"A what? Jecht, you are drunk."

That same rakish grin, with a crookedness to it that turned Auron's mouth dry. "Clever boy," Jecht said, winking, and Auron couldn't take any more of this disaster waiting to happen.

He sighed, shaking his head, and started to stand up. "Jecht, go to sle-what are you-"

Jecht had dropped the bottle to the ground and the whisky was soaking into the soft earth; was twisting his fingers in Auron's jacket and pulling him down to press their mouths together. It was clumsy and awkward and tasted sharp and sour like the whisky Jecht had been downing like water. The stubble on Jecht's unshaven face scraped at his cheeks and Auron was standing bent at an uncomfortable angle.

And yet there was no way for Auron to deny that it was not an unpleasant experience - not by a long shot. And when Jecht pulled away, all Auron could say (and it was more of a croak than anything), "You're drunk."

"You already said that," Jecht answered, and somehow he was still grinning.

Auron stumbled back to the tent before he made an even bigger fool of himself than he already had.

But he couldn't wipe the taste of whisky from his lips.

The years in the cage centered him, Basch thinks: it’s so easy for the world to become so simple. When he is freed, he thinks only of his duty (duty has, after all, kept him sane so long in the dark). Basch does not feel wronged when the child attempts to strike him, nor anything at all when the sky pirates exchange glances at his lack of reaction. They pity him, perhaps. He finds he can only consider this distantly. He does not quite remember what it is like to pity.

“How does it feel to be free?” Balthier murmurs, when they step out into the blessed, scorching heat of the unforgiving Dalmascan sun.

Basch glances at him, then back over the sands, where the Viera walks with the grace of a desert gazelle, and at the boy, his grudge briefly forgotten, running whooping and laughing after a rabbit. He shrugs. “Dalmasca is not yet freed.”

The pirate rolls his eyes heavenward, but Basch only regards him a moment longer, silently, empty but for the bone-deep conviction that he has nursed since his betrayal. He takes a step after the Viera, the sand filling scratchy and hot into his salvaged sandals, gritty between his toes.

“What do you intend to do in Rabanastre?” Balthier asks, behind him. He can hear the pirate resettling his rifle over his shoulders, with a pull of leather, and thinks that the boy would burn soon. He looks the sort – runaway gentry from Archadia, mayhap.

“Look for associates,” he murmurs, hoping that his tone will keep the pirate from asking further questions.

“The Rebellion, you mean.”

Basch hesitates only a moment. “Aye.”

Balthier sniffs. “Rabanastre has some fine taverns.”

“Aye.” Basch says, wondering about the non-sequitur, trudging gratefully into the shade of the overhang. Wolves watch them from the boulders, wary and slinking.

“Decent food, too, if I recall.”

Basch nods absently, having little interest in small talk. His throat is too parched for that, his mind too occupied. His back feels raw under the breeze. He has to find Vossler: he quite doubts the man is dead.

“Basch.”

“Aye.”

“Do you remember what it is like to be free?”

At that he turns around, blinks. He doesn’t understand the question. And then he takes a step back, or tries to – the pirate is too close – but Balthier sidesteps quickly into his space, kisses him hard on the lips, and he gathers leather-scented warmth into his arms without a thought. He doesn’t-

Balthier pulls away with a laugh. “Gods, you taste terrible,” he says, and saunters past, his hips swaying. Confused, embarrassed, astonished, Basch realizes he now remembers what it is like to be human.

Vossler sat down beside Basch on the edge of the bed, and as an afterthought, took the half-drained tankard of ale from the man’s nerveless fingers, dumping it on the ground, before starting on the clasp of Basch’s cloak. He managed to get Basch down to undershirt and breeches before Basch spoke, his voice low. “How is Lady Ashelia?”

He hesitated, then shook his head. “What do you think?” His own voice was gruff: Vossler had last seen Ashelia weeping almost hysterically over the coffin in the stateroom, swathed in black silk. She was only seventeen.

“I… I should speak with her.”

“Tomorrow.” Vossler placed a callused palm on Basch’s shoulder, squeezed, feeling the tension through the pads of his fingers.

“I watched him die,” Basch looked down at his hands. “He was in my charge and I watched him die.”

“The soldiers spoke to me. You could not have done anything.” Vossler sighed. “The boy tried to be a hero and charged in front of his guard. He was flanked and slaughtered. That was what happened. It was miracle enough that you brought him back.”

“I brought his body back. I should have stopped him. I knew it was dangerous. We should have retreated once the west gate fell.” Basch was turning his palms over and over. “I am a General, and he was eighteen.”

“Look, not even Ashelia thinks it is your fault-”

“But it is,” Basch snapped, then he took a slow breath. “I apologize. Perhaps you should… perhaps you should leave me be, for now.”

“To do what, drink yourself into a stupor or continue beating yourself over something that cannot be undone?” Vossler countered, his eyes narrowed. “Basch, the best thing you can do now is have a good night’s rest, and speak to the Council tomorrow with a report. You did not fail anyone. Hells, I had a good mind to punch you for taking the risk you did.”

At that, there was a grudging smile. “You did?”

“Heroics kill people in wars,” Vossler growled, and his fingers inched further, until his arm lay across Basch’s shoulders. The other knight leant into the embrace, and Vossler absently kissed at the side of his mouth. Damn Archades and its damned war.

“It will happen again,” Basch murmured. “Like Landis. Archades will swallow Dalmasca and then-”

“It won’t, and even if it will, we will fight back. It won’t last. Sooner or later it’ll find out how troublesome a fish it tried to swallow.”

“It will happen again,” Basch repeated, but softer now, his tone distant, lost in old deaths. “The Empire.”

“It won’t.” He wished that he could sound more confident. “Come on. You had better get some sleep.” Basch murmured against his neck, and dragged Vossler down to curl against him on the narrow bed.
