seventhe: (Laguna: this is his life)
So, I initially said I was going to do a mini-Nano. Well. I kind of intended to work on an original story I'd already started. Then, Becky and I were going to work on ~shame novels~. Now, I have no idea what I'm going to do. And it's November 1st!

I do want to work on my original stories. I really do. But at this point I'm not sure it'll carry me through the month.

So hey! Leave me some prompts.

Like always, I make no guarantee that they're going to get written at all. (See for reference: I took prompts last year, and they did erupt into words, but none of them ever got finished.)

So no guarantees and no promises and maybe I'll just end up trolling those prompts from last year because some of them are still awesome (BALLS AND SPAGHETTI, ANYONE??), but if you have any new ideas, or revamps of old ideas, throw them at me

25,000 words i swear it will happen
seventhe: (Life: stress out and die)
WELL HEY THEN

So I compiled everybody's claim-a-thon picks and ran the code this morning. It's done! It was, uh, not flawless. HOWEVER, I have it worked out so that everyone gets an assignment and everyone gets a gift. There are going to be a couple double-ups and a couple covers, but hey, you knew that going into this, lol.

Rambling about the results )

So. I'll be sending out emails today with everybody's claim! I have to send them from my phone because job blocks Gmail, so they will all be simple and boring. Please forgive. If you haven't gotten anything by tonight, check your spam folder, and then email me if there's still nothing.

I would like to do the posting on AO3. I am pretty sure everybody here has an AO3 account, and I actually think it will be more fun because: We can do a partial reveal. Look, my journal/FL/Circle is like a big incestuous clusterfuck already, so I think it might be fun to do a two-step reveal? Gifts would go live whenever they were posted, but they'd be anonymous, and then when everybody's was up we could reveal authors and have an author party? IS EVERYBODY OKAY WITH THIS?

Cause I set up a collection here that you can post to. Whenever you're ready. Right now it's all locked up / unrevealed, but if everybody is okay with the double reveal, I'll open it up so that it will show gifts but not authors right now. :D

EDIT -- Okay, so everyone has gotten an "assignment" claim, in email, but! If you are really into any of the other prompts and you want to write them anyway, email me and I'll send on that person's information so that you can write a surprise gift too!

I told you this was a super casual thing. XD
seventhe: (Ondore: he lies)
Okay, friends! It's claiming time!

PARTICIPANTS, here's what you do:
  • Head through the list. It's arranged by fandom, in a general order, so if you're worried about spoilers, pay attention to the headers; crossovers are at the bottom. The list isn't pretty, so forgive me, I'm generally out of fucks. Take a look! There are 48 ass-kicking prompts.

  • Choose three prompts that you want to fill the most! Leave a comment on the post with the three numbers you want. They don't need to be in any order, just leave them like "15, 26, 32" -- that's easier for me. All the comments are screened.

  • Once everybody has replied, I'll take these, work my code magic, and (hopefully) everything will work out. You'll get an email from me and another post when that happens! But I can't start anything until everybody has claimed: please claim as soon as possible.

HEY NON-PARTICIPANTS: THERE'S STUFF YOU CAN DO TOO!
If looking at these prompts turns you on, but you didn't sign up to play this round, here's how you can help: leave a comment with numbers of prompts you'd be willing to write back-up on. That will help me, in case there's someone whose prompts just don't get picked (for whatever reason -- the code can't protect against that). Again, all comments are screened! No worries.

HERE ARE ALL THE PROMPTS! )

CLAIM AWAY, MY DARLINGS. <3 <3
seventhe: (Default)
There are 14 people signed up now! That's good enough for me to work with, so it's definitely a go!! However, I wouldn't mind a few more, so if you were interested, head on over and sign up.

I'll shut it off some time tonight and put up prompts tomorrow night for claiming~~!
seventhe: (FFEX: Doink!)

COME PLAY COME PLAY COME PLAY

edit: If you can't come play, please at least take a second and give us a shout-out -- with [community profile] ff_press still down, the only way we have to advertise is word-of-mouth (or journal, in this case). There's easy code - with ~banners!~ in so many colors! - you can just copy-paste here. Even if you can't participate, helping to spread the word over the next week or so would be awesome.
seventhe: (Quistis: smile)
I saw Distant Worlds last Friday, and it was amazing. I'd heard from a lot of people that it was going to be really good, but I had kind of been trying to keep reasonable expectations and all. It was just unbelievable, though, like on a lot of levels: this is the music from a series of games I have been playing for over 20 years now, well over half my life, and I listened to them in a gorgeous ballroom-type setting thing surrounded by people from the internet that I met through these games who are now some of my closest and best friends in the world. It's a little mind-blowing when I put it that way. No wonder I got a bit emotional.

The show opened with the Opening: Bombing Mission from FFVII, and that was definitely a "get chills" type thing: [personal profile] novel_machinist and [personal profile] crankyoldman were the first people I met in person through fandom, [mumble] years ago, and we all met through FFVII and cosplayed really shitty Turks at our first convention and there they were sitting right in front of me: LULZ, to put it in the vernacular. Can I use any more colons: WE'LL FIND OUT.

Other highlights of the show for me:
  • The fucking battle music from FFVIII. What the everloving fuck: why did this make me cry? But it did. I think it was the moment I realized they were using the footage from the scene in Dollet where they're running from that giant monster and Quistis fucks it up with the machine gun so that Squall can escape. I have unhealthy feelings about this game.

  • On that note: EYES ON ME. HOLY JESUS. Sobfest over basically a Squall/Rinoa songvid. I absolutely loved that singer.

  • and on that note: MAN WITH THE MACHINE GUN. Will I ever not love this song in its entirely? JFMC.

  • There were two pieces from FFIX, and even though that wasn't my favorite game, I'd forgotten (a) how poignant and pretty the music is and (b) that the game can still pack an emotional punch with some of those visuals.

  • FFIV's Theme Of Love. It's a beautiful song from my favorite game. I probably would have liked a little more music from FFIV - they did a medley from I-III that was amazing and made me tear up a little, and it would have been nice to see the same for FFIV; it has the kind of very repetitive music I think would be suited for a medley. Then again I'm a little prejudiced about this game.

  • Zanarkand. Fucking Zanarkand. I cried so hard at this one. The visuals were just really well done - people cry, and Yuna dances - and personally I think it's top five one of the most beautifully emotional songs in the entire FF series.

  • THE OPERA FROM FFVI. I wasn't sure how this was going to play out, but I was hopeful, and it was absolutely amazing. The singers were phenomenal, and they put little clips of the Opera House from the game up in-between the singing parts, and I got pretty emotional seeing Locke running around in the rafters and Edgar and Sabin sitting in the chairs ("Why is everyone singing?") and all of that. Again, nostalgia time: my brother Jim and I pooled all our money to buy FFVI (FFIII!) when it came out and we played the hell out of it and we still joke about it. My brother: came to the Distant Worlds concert. I'd already been crying, but I sobbed at the fricking opera.
(Side note: am I the only old person one who still wants to say, "Oh my hero / so far away now / will I ever see your smile"? I know they re-wrote/re-translated the opera in other releases of the game and in FFVI Advance and all, but the original translation will always be the one in my head.

  • Terra's Theme is still like top three pieces of music forever, although they ruined it a little by playing credits through it. Maybe I'm just bitter because MY FAVORITE.

  • The entire crowd singing SEPH-I-ROTH was a really good note to end on: I've never really been able to adore Sephiroth like most of the fandom, but One Winged Angel is still awesome music, and having the crowd sing was an awesome way to end on a good note with a badass game and a badass villain without taking itself too seriously. It was pretty awesome.

The rest of the weekend was an exhausting blur of internet friends and alcohol. Just take a look at this: [livejournal.com profile] safety_caesars and [personal profile] ser_pounce_alot and I drove out on Thursday to pick up [personal profile] deadcellredux and [profile] notraffic, then met [personal profile] justira and [personal profile] novel_machinist on Friday and [personal profile] crankyoldman late Fri / early Sat. That's a lot of Final Fantasy. And a lot of booze.

It was a great weekend and an amazing show. Coming back to a day of meetings starting at 5AM (the day; 6:20 for the workday) was kind of like a punch in the face.

SORRY -- crossposting from DW to LJ hasn't been working lately. This post was meant to go up a few days ago.

This entry is ONLY for people who would want to participate in a really tiny, really unofficial exchange designed only to let me test code because I'm a curious nerd.
- - -

HI GUYS! I really just want to know what fandoms people would ask for and what fandoms people would want to create for! For right now I am going to say Final Fantasy only JUST because I think there's the biggest overlap there. If this works, I'm all for doing a second test (as I'm sure I'm going to need to tweak the code) with more fandoms, it's cool.

This is a claim-a-thon, or a claim-it-forward, type of matchup, which means there will be a list of prompts and YOU pick the things you want to volunteer to write or draw. That does, however, mean a lot of this is dependent on the prompts. So I just want to gather a general fandom list to see if there's enough overlap for it to run.

Here's an abridged version of how it would work:

  1. You would, privately, email me with three prompts. (Prompts would probably need to fit art or fic, although if you really wanted one over the other you could specify, since this is an opt-in claim-a-thon.) Because it's a claim-a-thon feel free to be as dirty or as clean as you'd like -- people will only claim your prompt if they're into it.

  2. I compile a post with all of the prompts, identified only by numbers.

  3. You read the post of prompts, and in a SCREENED AND SECRET comment, you leave me the numbers of the three prompts you's most like to fill. So you are opting IN to the prompts. Your comment would just say, you know, "3, 15, 22!" and that means you're okay with filling any of those three.

  4. I plug everyone's choices into my MAGICAL CODE, and (HOPEFULLY) it spits out the best possible match for everyone. The code is entirely dependent on what people choose, however, so there's a chance that someone will have none of their prompts picked. (It wouldn't mean your prompts suck - it would probably just be fandom/character overlap type stuff. If this has the chance of bothering you, then don't participate in the trial round, because I have no idea how likely it actually is.) If that's the case, I will fill a prompt for that person, or I will hail a friend to do so.

  5. Because this is a free-for-all super-low-key exchange thing, you get your assignment and post your fill anywhere your recipient can read it (I think we probably all have AO3 at this point? I will totally make a terribly named collection) and bam, there we go. SevMas!

So yeah: just leave a comment with what fandoms you'd be most likely to ask for, and what fandoms you'd be looking to claim. :D

The DW post is here if you want to see fandoms people have already mentioned~!

HEY EVERYBODY

Every year we want to do a little something to keep Doink happy and active during its off-season. Usually we try to encourage people to create Chocobo Down -- look at that prompt list -- but this year we're trying a little something extra.

It's a team-based challenge: CHOCOBO RACING.

Basically you sign up to be on a team, and any Chocobo Down you create will give your team points. Every month we'll have a theme, and if you create Chocobo Down that fits the theme, you get even more points for your team!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooo if you want to play, read up on how it works, and then you can sign up for your team here (DW) or here (LJ) - you only have to sign up once.

[personal profile] renay is the captain of TEAM TONBERRY, and I am the captain of TEAM CACTUAR. I'm just saying. You don't have to be on Team Cactuar. That's not why I'm posting this at all. Of course. Nope. You can be on whatever team you want. Really.

ALL I'M SAYING IS CACTUAR RULES

Look, guys, this week has already been a veritable shitbasket of awful presents from Mother Life, but there's one thing I am totes looking forward to more than sleep, yes that is a true statement (as this thing will stand in the way of my sleep for like a month or two) and that thing is:

DOINK 2010: a brand-new round of Final Fantasy Exchange ♥ ♥

Seriously! I am watching these prompts roll in and plotting as to which diabolical pairing I'm going to adopt as my own and write 20,000 words for this time. This year: there are really good prompts, guys! I DO NOT LIE.

Also: SWEET NEW FORM. I do not think I could praise this form more if it were giving me a neck massage at this very moment. This form is as sexy as Shemar Moore. This form is as awesome as espresso. You know you want to sign up just for the form.

We have [livejournal.com profile] ff_exchange and [community profile] ff_exchange for your pleasure this year; introductory post for signups is here.

If you want to help/participate but don't want to play, there are two really awesome ways you can sign up to be part of these shenanigans! The first is to sign up to be one of our non-participant pinch hitters - there's no commitment; you're just adding your name to an email list of people we will appeal to in cases of emergency: you decide what you do/don't do. The second is to sign up to be an on-call beta volunteer; there will be more about that coming soon, but let me know if you're interested so I can specifically point you that way. :)

GUYS. When we decided to do a 2010 round I was like "ohgod" and "what the shit were we thinking" but now that is it here I am bouncing around like the world's most hyperactive kitten. This only proves that I am not all there in the head (I IMMEDIATELY REGRET THIS DECISION) but I kind of don't care because yay! FFEX!

In celebration, I'm going to go back to last round and read a bunch of things I didn't get to read (seriously: I don't think I read anything except my own gift; sorry to everyone I love who wanted comments, lol) and post some recs to show just how awesome we are. YOU are; it's fandom that makes this thing so fantastic *single emo tear* I AM A GIGANTIC LOSER, AND DON'T CARE.

More on Awesome Weekend of WineCon and recs tomorrow, but I wanted to get this out tonight.

THE OTAKON PHOTOS ARE IN. I've been waiting to post all the pictures together in one big massive love-fest, because this year was just FANTASTIC. I'm including my favorites here (basically, the terrible and hilarious ones, as well as photoshoot ones that are just awesome) and I highly suggest you all look at them, especially if you like FFVI, but also if you need a GOOD LAUGH and some AWESOME COSPLAY in your life. And who doesn't?

I haven't yet uploaded [livejournal.com profile] yi_sen's shots of the Braska/Auron/Jecht PHOTOBOMBING, so, uh. Those will be later.

WARNING: METRIC SHIT-TONNE OF PHOTOS.

FFVI Photoshoot and Outtakes! )

And now, the out-takes:

FFVI Continues... )

The FFVI photoshoot is here, and the outtakes (and the rest of my photos) can be found here. There are some really good solo shots in the photog's album, and there are some more funny bar shots in my album, whichever you prefer. ;)

Seriously, I had the world's shittiest day today, and this made my life. I LOVE YOU GUYS.

[livejournal.com profile] ff_exchange, ROUND 2, OPEN FOR SIGNUPS.

Yes, that's right. I'm insane! But I love fandom.

Come on over, sign up, and pimp the hell out of it. People who advertise for it or bring friends in might get extra Chocobo Down for me, I am just saying. I will remember at the end of the round. Really.

seventhe: (Cock: the new plot)
Intro
Last January, I tried something I cunningly called "JanNoWriMo" -- since I often fail at NaNoWriMo in November -- during which I intended to "write a lot". It didn't work, partially because I lack organizational skill and partially because I lack motivation. This year, I'm trying to fix both.

The Idea
I want to write something, every day, for the entire month of January. More specifically, my goal is to write at least 500 words every day in January of 2009, which gives me a month-long target over 15,000 words. While I'd like to hit 500 per day, I will be satisfied with a 100-word drabble or even a few sentences on a currently-existing project, if that's all I get. So, for me personally, my goals are the following, ranked by priority!:
  1. Write something, every day, in January.

  2. Write over 15,000 words total in January.

  3. Write at least 500 words a day.
If I can get to #3, that's great. But I'll be satisfied if I only hit #1. These three goals are, in a nutshell, the concept behind JanNoWriMo 2009.

Participation
To my surprise, people expressed interest in doing this crazy thing with me. Hooray for people! Yay! JanNoWriMo = PARTY TIME.

Some people prefer structure when working towards a deadline; I know I do, because it helps me to be specific rather than general. So, I've provided some structure, in the form of steps, because I like lists. PLUS A CALENDAR! Because I am clearly in charge awesome.

Keep in mind, however, that what I've included under the cut isn't a "set of rules": there are no rules. I'm not "in charge" of anything. You can do with your JanNoWriMo whatever you want to, and I'll still be happy that you played along!

JanNoWriMo 2009 Participation Happy Fun Time )
As a final note on participation, this is open to everyone -- fanfiction, original work, poetry, whatever you'd like, as long as it's "writing" in some form! And feel free to invite others; all of my JanNoWriMo posts will be totally public. Again: not in charge of anything; I'm just the organizer.

Celebration
I haven't yet decided what to promise for February, but there will at least be a wrap-up post of everyone who participated and how many days/words we each actually wrote! Ideally I'd like to have a big spammo link day where I post links to everyone's January work and we all go around and review each other in a big self-insert circle-jerk um just like my fantasies!!!1 and stuff, but some people may not be ready to post WIP stuff, so I'm undecided on that. However, I'll definitely be spreading some recognition and congratulations for everybody. And you know that's what you all want: my undying pantsless love.

Apology...
...to the non-writers on my F-List. There's going to be a lot of flailing and posting about this in January. However, the writing itself will all be over at [livejournal.com profile] brokenprism, so at least you won't be exposed to my terrible House/Wilson/Me/Wilson Again fantasies. I mean uh. what? that's a joke. Then again, if you've ever thought about writing, even just as a hobby... why not try it? You're invited, too!

Conclusion
It's already December 29th. Those of us who consider ourselves writers -- don't we all have "write more" as a New Year's Resolution? This is an easy way to keep it. Easy AND fun. Easy and fun, and awesome! Easy, fun, awesome, and totally doable.

Interested?
To keep this semi-official, just drop me a comment if you're planning on doing anything for JanNoWriMo (no matter how small), so I know whose journals I need to stalk! Otherwise, get planning, because January 1st is only a few days away!
