I adore clothes.

My challenges are/were different than yours, but I too started with the pieces and parts theory and hit the wall with it. My challenges were "all of the people that tried to teach me how to dress are about 100 to 150 lbs smaller and about six to eight inches shorter than me" plus "ha ha, fat girl, we don't make clothes in your size, have a muumuu, cry harder".

Question: do you have the ability to have a hanger in your office that has Extra Pants whose job is to live at the office in case your pants get ripped? In my office I used to keep a pair of clean socks, a change of underwear (YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN AUNT FLO WILL VISIT) and a pair of black pants that weren't my favorite but certainly hit dress code. It helped me salvage a day when I got my period AND got splashed with mud, so while it's not crawling under scaffolding, I feel for that one singular event I was approximately at the same level of dirty.

Regarding fashion, I have had to buckle down and realize a few things. here comes a list.

1. I am freaking Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross: Always Be Closing. I calculated it out once. Literally one-sixth of my goddamn attention and life is spent figuring out what the hell to wear. I allow myself to resent the fuck out of the necessity of this even as I continue to do it, because like you, I want to look good. Therefore. If I see an item in size fat that looks good, I freaking buy it if I have the money to do so (a big if). I actively shop outlets so that I can have an originally 80 dollar shirt for 5.99, and thus if it gets ruined in the washing machine I'm like eh, easy come easy go, instead of flipping out.

2. I have a Pinterest board where I collect the clothes and looks that I like and that's helped me clarify my thinking (I know, we follow each other, but Pinterest is a huge organizational tool for me on this): https://www.pinterest.com/celeloriel/all-the-clothes/ The board description is my style statement: "I'm a plus-size woman in her 30s who's just figured out her style inspiration is "superheroine's elegant mild mannered alter ego". But the tulle skirts still sneak their way in."

3. I completely agree with you about accessories and envy your way with scarves. My 40H cups make every attempted scarf I wear look like a turkey's neck ruff.

4. I'm super interested in the fashion advice for ladies in "dirty" jobs, because I find fashion advice interesting full stop.

5. Have you ever checked out Already Pretty? Sal, the blogger over there, has her head on straight and has some really great ideas about personal style. I find her writing really accessible and her style pretty cool.
