The hand of cards made a delicate fan-shape on the table. Even for a Viera, Fran looked unnaturally pleased with herself.
Vaan scowled at the neat arch of cards before her. "You cheated. You totally cheated."
Balthier chuckled. "Vaan, think before you speak, if you would," he said, adding in an undertone: "Just where in the world would she hide her cards?"
Fran's ear twitched. Vaan glanced at her attire again as if his brain needed remembering. "I guess you're right," he said finally, slumping in his chair. "But still."
Balthier lay down his own hand with a dramatic flourish. "Well, my dear, you win. Even with my best efforts to cheat you out of it."
Fran smiled. The smile was full of teeth. "I believe I am owed."
"Yes, yes." Balthier leant back in the chair. "What shall it be, then? Another shot of Madhu and I am afraid our young partner may find himself on the floor."
"May not," Vaan protested.
Fran glanced from the boy to her co-pilot and back. "When we last played," she said slowly and particularly, "there was an additional type of currency."
Balthier's smile suddenly became very forced.
Vaan only looked confused. "What's that mean?"
Fran smiled again. There was a long pause.
"Very well," Balthier said with a groan, standing up. "I suppose it's only fair revenge for last time - although I wish you could have taken it with your sword, like Lady Ashe did."
Fran looked unspeakably smug. "I see no use for Hume revenge."
Vaan stood up as well, swaying where he stood and looking confused. "What the hell is she-"
Balthier swooped down on him, mashing their lips together. Vaan's knees buckled, and Balthier caught him with one arm, fumbling slightly. He set the boy back into his chair and sent a perfectly arched eyebrow at his Viera partner.
"Acceptable," Fran said, and Balthier could swear she was laughing.
"We need more girls in this game," Vaan muttered.
