okay, so once I had a Twitter. I was, in fact, pretending to be Reno from FFVII, but I had a Twitter. It was linked to my phone, which was nice, until the other people in the group took off with replies and I ended up with 500000 unread text messages on my phone, which I did not want. So I turned off the phone option, and as I'm sure you'll all notice, I no longer use the Reno Twitter.

Let's say I was going to set up my own Twitter from my phone. And I wanted to get notifications on it, but only when someone was actually talking to me. so I only want text messages sent to me if they have the @sev (or whatever) tag in them.

Is there a way to do this? Remember Sev is old and Twitter-stupid before you make fun, people.

I think it does so automatically, and you have to set it up on your phone if you want to actually follow people's updates. This is according to my guesses at the Help page and what a Twitter-happy friend of mine has said.

I would follow people on the site; all I want is for anything with the "@sev" tag to be also forwarded to my phone, but NOT normal updates.

According to my two minutes of research, regular tweets on your following page won't be sent to your phone unless you manually command them too. http://help.twitter.com/portal This site explains it in more detail (scroll down to Official Twitter Text Commands), but it doesn't out and out say that updates replying to your updates will be sent to your phone, just heavily implies it.

I just set up twitter on my phone, and while a few new tweets have appeared on the site since then, none of them have been sent to me.

You might want to ask Cel, she is very Twitter-smart.

I do not have things sent to my phone, mostly because omg RPers on Twitter I die, but I know that you can set your phone to only forward you updates from specific people. I dunno.

I'm not sure, but I think you can subscribe to get cellphone updates for some people and not others, but I don't think you can set it up to only send you @replies. I can't test it for you, though, 'cause that function doesn't work in the UK.

Unfortunately, you can't get just @you messages. This has been a major fail from Twitter for a long time. The only thing you can do is to go to the twitter page and look at the page listing of all posts that reference @you.

There's no built in way to get your @replies texted to you by twitter. It's one of its major failings and I honestly don't understand why the hell you can't.

There's one service that will let you send a text, and get a response (or series of responses) with your latest @replies.

Something I'm working on, however, is a program that takes my @replies and re-tweets them to a separate account which I then subscribe to on my phone. Kind of round-about but it should work.

...if you figure that out, please let me know! I can check Twitter in bulk like I check other things; I really would just care about messages that were @me. I don't want to have to subscribe to follow by text every single person, as... I'd just die, buried in text messages. (Yes, it could happen.)

Oh, I know. It would be ridiculous.

When I was at PyCon I signed up to get SMS messages from the PyCon twitter. And while sometimes it was useful "Event X happening at 12:30!" most of the time it was just spam. Eventually found it was just better to check it on a regular basis.

But I want notification of my @replies too so I can get back to people faster. And because I'm a narcissist.

I need to figure out how to get Twitter OAuth working. The rest should be trivial. When I get it working I'll let you know...

Yes, exactly -- I can be away from the computer for long periods of time, and I'd like to know if people were replying to me specifically sooner rather than later. Because I always have my phone. Because I'm arrogant like that. (Now watch as I use my Twitter for TOTAL SERIOUS BUSINESS.)

I know nothing about how to do something like that, though. You are awesome for even attempting.

Wait, you have a penis? Awesome! ...where do you hide when you're wearing things like this?

'Cause I'd really like to know how to do that.

I'm young and still Twitter-stupid. I mostly only use it to follow ValkyriaTribune because the person running it has ties to Sega and occasionally gets info before anywhere or anything else.
