Ha ha, omg. So, now that I am working in gaming-but-also-education-with-engineering some days I rather feel like I get the one two punch in regards to this. Because not only am I a subject matter expertish person in a male-dominated field, I'm also working with things whose subculture is traditionally male-dominated, but also violently misogynistic at times!

I also get to deal with other women telling me that this doesn't exist, because of the education side (as education is female-dominated). Gaaaah.

I find it hard trying to explain this to privileged women (in the sense they are doing something that men/society/your mom approves of) or the unfortunate anti-girls that don't seem to realize they're furthering the divide and by saying that women are crazy or they aren't one that they're giving the guys an ok to be jackasses.

There's a wonderful series of slightly interconnected posts that go into the misogyny of gaming (and oh god the comments) that I was reading yesterday for work research (written by a man no less!):

How people explain female geeks
Nerd girls, sex appeal, and stereotypes
Sexism and misogyny in geek culture
Geeks vs jocks

Also, you're reading my mind, because I was going to make a post about how now the sexism has changed into something more subtle!
