Oooh, gosh, words.

Look, okay, I was that kid looking up all kinds of words in the dictionary because I was fascinated with their roots; drawing lines together between similar words, suffixes and prefixes and root-bits and I loved seeing where they came from and how they traveled through time, and it's unfortunate that nobody ever told me linguistics even fucking EXISTED until I was already a Chemical Engineer, because I would have loved to take the shit out of that class. I have always loved words, been fascinated by words, etc.

So here are a couple categories off the top of my head!

Words that suck because they are '-ist' words that have crept into the vernacular, including MINE, despite their offensiveness; and I hate that I say them and hate that I never learned about them until they were unfortunately habitual.

retarded - This is an obviously offensive word! And yet! I hear it a lot. I used to USE it a lot in that way that kids have. It was revealed to me how totally insensitive it is to use this as an insult fairly young, when my brother was "dating" a girl whose sister was mentally challenged, and my use of the word bothered them both. It is still embarrassing they they even had to tell me this. But I will publish my shame in the hopes of spreading the awareness trend. This word kind of sucks, and it isn't free to use.

lame - This one still creeps into my speech from time to time if I am not thinking, but I am trying to get better at it. It is ablist. It kind of sucks as an insult because it is ablist. I am not blaming you if you use it; I use it too and I'm trying to stop.

whore - I have learned that this just isn't really a polite insult to use on anyone and it is fairly sexist but sadly it does not stop the words "MY REACTOR IS A WHORE" from coming out of my mouth on really bad days; I'm trying, guys ._.

pimping - Another one that kind of just isn't cool, and I have to stop on the instinct to say "Hey, pimp this post" because it isn't that funny :/


Words that suck because I always fucking misspell them - okay, seriously, this needs some explanation.

I am a really good speller. I hate writing things like that because I feel like an arrogant braggart but it's true and there's really no other way to say it; I'm an excellent speller and I always have been. I can't necessarily spell everything out loud because I have a brain-to-mouth disconnect, but if you let me write a word down I can pretty much guarantee that it's going to be spelled correctly (unless I am drunk, at which point I might plan Cock Hangman with you, where every word is Cock and a penis dies if you guess incorrectly). I'm a good speller when I'm not thinking, which is why I can write-spell but not speak-spell, and other than typos the same is true when typing: I rock at spelling words.

EXCEPT FOR A FEW MOTHERFUCKERS THAT NEVER MADE IT INTO MY BRAIN CORRECTLY.

embarrassing - I seriously do not know why.

disappoint - Again: why. I hate you, word.

publically - Now, technically, this IS a legitimate spelling of the word according to dictionary.com, but it isn't the "most correct" one.

I'm sure I'll come up with others as I write this post.


Sayings I do not like and things that annoy me.

"Enjoy!" by your waiter at the restaurant: it just seems so unnecessary.

The use of u or 2 by anyone who is not legitimately so fucking busy at that very moment that they cannot type three goddamn letters: yeah.

lolcat speak and spelling - actually drives me up the wall, sorry, every now and then one makes me smile but overall I really find them pretty annoying.

Yum-yum - my mother said this once and I wanted to bang my head on a table.

And how about a word that is cool?

COCK.

My biggest one is "bitch." I use it...constantly. And it needs to stop.

There should be some kind of group therapy for people like us. Offensive Word Users Anonymous.

"Retarded" and its various forms is the one that always makes me cringe, because my brother is high-functioning autistic (with above-average intelligence), and that was the playground insult that was always hurled in his direction. Even when I was young, it became emblematic of how little people understood him, and how they didn't even want to try. So I am always happy to hear when someone is trying to eradicate it from their vocabulary.

The one I have trouble with is "lame"; hard as I try, it still pops out without thinking. I'm working on it, though!
