After breakfast, we got on the bus to the museum at San Sabba, the rice factory that served as a concentration camp in WWII. As expected, it was quite harrowing, especially walking into the middle square where the Nazis had torched the crematorium before fleeing. The hole where the chimney had been ripped out has a small plaque and flower vase in front of it. I am not at all superstitious. However, the feeling you get walking in from the entrance is one of tremendously bad juju. The dank cells with the wooden doors and too-small bunks may be the only physical remains of the instruments of torment, but the walls are permeated with it. We did not take any photos. We read through all the exhibition materials in the museum. Keiki insisted we leave a donation to ensure all is preserved so no one forgets.

Our bus ride back to town was quiet, and at the end of the journey we walked to a gelateria. Everyone practiced ordering in Italian. We must have done reasonably well as the server smiled at us a great deal and our single scoop cones wobbled under the weight of gelato piled in.

Much of the rest of the day was spent walking, punctuated by stops for refreshments and a bit of shopping. We visited the Cattedrale di San Giusto Martire (photos in a separate post), and we watched the sunset from the harbour’s edge.

Aww! But also lmao. X'D And Toushirou speaking to it in in accented Japanese I can't.

🤣🤣🤣

Aww the Toushirou brothers sometimes massage Munechika's shoulders...until he had the idea of them using the backs of their blades?!

That ending, I can''t breathe!!!

Chapter 5: Saniwa recommended a horror movie to Kunihiro and Gokotai...

Gokotai using Yamanbagiri's blanket. 🥹

It was really cruel to get them to watch a horror movie like that though, even I would despair without steeling myself properly.

The Mia Ballard/Shy Girl Thing

I've been sitting on this for a bit, chewing on it, and my takeaway is Hatchette is full of assholes.

I was already annoyed by the innovative new tradpub acquisition process wherein the indie author does all the work (gets the idea for the book, writes the book, edits the book, gets a cover for the book, publishes the book, does the marketing for the book, builds the platform, attracts readers, gains momentum, starting selling lots of books) and Hachette swoops in to offer a deal and take the lion's share of the profits, because Traditional Publishers Don't Actually Know How to Sell Books They Just Sorta Get Lucky Sometimes (United States v. Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster), and letting the author do literally everything and establish the book has legs saves them the trouble.

The only thing worse is the audio pubs hoovering up every audio book right they can find by low-balling clueless indies with pocket change offers. (Do your research and counter-offer Podium. I'm begging you.)

Hatchette knew what they bought. They knew the beef with the stolen cover, they knew the rumors the book was written with AI. They thought they could make a buck off Mia Ballard with frankly minimal effort on their part, and they didn't care about the AI stuff until they started to get heat. Then, instead of supporting the author THEY APPROACHED, they threw her to the curb like trash.

When faced with accusations of stolen cover art, Hatchette actually commissioned A DIFFERENT artist to do a similar cover instead of working with the og artist. (?WTF?)

Now, Hatchette has the gall to say they are "committed to protecting creative expression." Eat my whole ass.

Wanna sign with trad? Better be sure, because once these people get their hooks into your book anything goes.

Anyway, my official stance on is it ok to use AI in your self-published book is: Fuck Hachette.

1. What was the last book you read (or are currently reading)?
Last read manhwa: On My Way to See Mom, would recommend! It's a 30-chapter story about an orphan boy in a post-apocalyptic world (where there are more aliens than humans) who discovers the concept of family one day and sets out to find it. Very comforting because the boy is so ordinary! He is small and round and human and that is enough reason for him to be deserving of love. It's gen through and through, which I like, and acknowledges that gender and gendered family roles are human constructs, which I also like. And the character designs are so good!!! Beautiful fantasy elements too, like whales in the sky.

Last read book: A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid, an 80-page essay about Antigua, post-colonialism, white tourism, and global power dynamics. Hits pretty close to home and written quite lyrically. Would also recommend!

Currently reading: The Fellowship of the Ring audiobook (narrated by Andy Serkis)—I'm not sure how sustainable the audio format is for my attention span but it got me further than all past attempts to read the text with my eyes. I now see the appeal of Tolkien. I still can't visualize anything, though...

2. What was the last movie you watched?
This morning's groupwatch—we meant to watch the Journal with Witch live action movie, but the subs were machine-translated from Chinese which was painful, so we switched to 100 Meters on Netflix. It's about what running means to athletes, the years and years of training and self-doubt all for these races which are over in 15 seconds, and what those 15 seconds mean. On paper: good concept! I can see this being a nice, thoughtful manga. In practice, it had some really interesting textures and breathtaking moments, but I thought the storytelling was poor and did not maximize the animated form. None of the characters also ever really have inner lives, and because of that, the main character's speech at the end feels unearned.

3. What television series are you currently watching?

  • Loving Strangers (cdrama): I stopped watching this for a while and then got back to it because I was feeling tired and 委屈, and this show is nothing but characters who are tired and 委屈.

  • How Dare You!? (cdrama): 14 eps in, I don't have very strong feelings about it but it's a group watch and there are enough interesting plot points that I'd like to see through. The show is kind of uneven, some sets of episodes are paced better than others. I really liked the first ED so I was very sad that they changed it to the more "serious" one.

  • Pursuit of Jade (cdrama): One of my oomfs said this got her out of a cdrama slump and true enough I managed to watch 2 eps in a row. XD I am not very enthused that the FL, a small village butcher, is Secretly Proficient in Martial Arts and has Secretly Important Parents (deceased).

  • Witch Hat Atelier (anime): So beautiful and worth the wait! Not sure how much the anime covers and how long I'll stick with it, but I'm pleased that its impact is mainstream enough that I have a common interest with IRLs again.

    4. What are some of your favorite blogs or communities online?
My fav community is the HnG server where we groupwatch non-HnG-related things and people share pictures of their local birds and flowers. :') Also the gaming channel in the NiF server, it's like the only channel I check haha. Also all the bookish people in my Dreamwidth and Storygraph circles because how else do I know what books exist! I read A Small Place because I saw two of my Storygraph mutuals (one of them is, naturally, [twitter.com profile] aartichapati) finish it recently.

My favorite blogs are mostly defunct. </3 Some old blogs that are still up but no longer active: Lazy Evaluation Ranch, a personal farm blog; Hanzis Matter, a blog "dedicated to the misuse of Chinese characters in western culture"; Source Code in TV and Films; and Said the Gramophone, a music blog (still updates every December).

    5. What social media do you belong to and check often?
Twitter and Bluesky... I also have an Instagram but as usual I've stopped checking it 😂

kalloway: A blond knight from the mobile video game Lord of Heroes (Lord of Heroes Johan)
    [personal profile] kalloway
A long weekend, since I will be helping my father with things on Sunday.

Through no fault of its own, Lord of Heroes will be shutting down in the near future. The developers put all their money and LoH's money into developing a game that went straight into development hell and then tanked upon release, bankrupting the entire company. It's the kind of ultra-grindy Korean gacha that has a really good story, but I never got more than halfway because the grindwalls are real. OG Shadowverse is also shutting down but at this point that'll mostly be reclaimed space on my phone. I just cannot brain card games.

    Probably going to bounce in and out of both Ever Crisis and Dissidia. That'll put me down to ~7 phone games. I guess Eternal, Last Cloudia, and Seven Knights will be my mains. Still need to get back to playing FFVII on Switch; I'm right before Wutai, which I've never actually played through, and feel like I need to put a little more effort into it. ^^;;

Picked up my new glasses, which are baby's first progressives and so far they're okay? I haven't quite figured out the proper angle to look at some things but I'll get there.

Should have the blue Estailev finished up tonight. Then, jokingly, I'm going to build like 10 HGs. But maybe. Definitely time for a few smaller things.

Catching up on some older prompts now that I'm in between books.

    1. EvS on Sakhalin

Prompt: EvS, that last night on Sakhalin between when Biggles first speaks to him and his escape the next day.

    Posted on Tumblr here.

    2. EvS & Algy (Biggles/EvS implied)

Prompt: Set post defection in London. A misunderstanding leads to Biggles being told that Erich is cheating on him. After some angst and h/c, their relationship is even stronger.

This went in a Direction. Also posted on Tumblr.

Two More Bottles of Booze Down

    Apr. 10th, 2026 08:36 pm
    canyonwalker: Cheers! (wine tasting)
    [personal profile] canyonwalker
Recently I polished off two big vodka bottles I've had in my kitchen for a long time. ...And when I say big, I mean these bottles are huge:

I just finished off these behemoth bottles of vodka - no, not all at once! (Apr 2026)

Well, okay, they're standard 1.75L capacity, but the bottles' shapes make them stand out more than most magnum liquor bottles. They don't fit in my cabinet. The Kirkland bottle didn't even fit under my cabinet, on the counter. I had to position it in front of the window.

And no, I didn't drink these all at once. I did finish both off on the same night, Wednesday. But each bottle had, like, 1 shot of liquor left in it. I decided I should stop thinking, "Oh, I should save the last bit of each for a special occasion," and just get 'em done. Or to put it another way, I decided "I want counter space back, and it's Wednesday," was enough of a special occasion. 🤣

Polishing these off was also part of the approach I've been taking for some time to tame the spread of liquor bottles in the kitchen. As far as my "drinking" problem goes, I've had wine and beer under control for a few years now, but hard liquor has been going wild. And that's even after I've made conscious decisions numerous times not to buy things that interest me.

My strategy for choosing to drink these vodkas was to focus on bottles that are getting near empty, to finish them off and free up the space. I was a bit surprised when I dug them out of the back row on the counter, poured, and saw how little was left. I thought there'd be 2-3 shots of each. Instead there were just 2 shots total. ...So little, in fact, that I then poured myself 2 shots of tequila after finishing these. A bottle of San Matias Extra Añejo is the next one I'm working on emptying. 🥃🥃😋
