Teenages make me laugh

You’ve got to go to judgement and stand trial.

Jezebel, Recoil

---

Reno couldn’t have said why he did it. Well, there were always the usual subjects. He was young, cocky, hormonal, under-aged, and drunk in a Midgarian bar after closing time. There were a lot of reasons why.

It was that he’d never seen her before. It wasn’t that she didn’t belong; she did. He could tell by the way she moved, by the fact that she never flinched at any of it. She belonged in the Slums, just like him. It was written all over her.

Minus the pink. Who the hell wore pink in the Slums anyway?

One of the guys he was drinking with said something but Reno didn’t hear it. He couldn’t even remember the other boy’s name now. It didn’t matter.

Reno stood and moved to close the distance – she was at the bar and he was in the back. He slipped through the people, the souls of his shoes making faint slurping sounds as they were constantly stuck and unstuck with every step he took.

There are lots of ways to kiss a girl, Reno knew. There are boy-meets-girl kisses. There are spin-the-bottle kisses.

This was not that kind of kiss.

Reno didn’t even bother tapping her on the shoulder first. He spun her around from the bar, noticed that her eyes were green – deep, clear green – and then kissed her, hard.

It was a kiss-me-like-the-world-is-ending kiss. It was a kiss-me-like-we’re-the-only-ones-left-standing kiss. It was the kind of kiss you gave a complete stranger that you’d spun and pressed up against the counter in a seedy Midgar bar after-hours.

The best part was that she kissed back. Reno felt her fingers dig into his hair and he shifted his weight to take a bit more of hers. Gods, she was everywhere. She was …

Reno knew that he was a good kisser but he had the vague suspicion that she was probably better.

Eventually her heels touched the ground again and he loosened his grip on her waist. It took them half a second to open their eyes. For the briefest instant, Reno had all kind of half-formed teenage boy thoughts in his head and vague concepts about what was going to come next.

Her eyes were just as green. For a brief moment they were slightly puzzled. Then –

The knee to his groin was swift, sharp, and very painful. The floor was as hard as it was sticky.

“Jerk!” the girl shrieked. “I thought you were my boyfriend!”

The green-eyed girl kicked Reno once more in the ribs just for good measure before storming out of the bar. Reno curled into the appropriate position and tried to pretend that there weren’t a few tears at the edge of his eyes.

It took a moment before a slow, devious smile crept onto his face.

Dear gods, it had been worth it.
