Sleeping Beauty

“What is it?”

Their wings fluttered, each pair out of time with the next, as they flitted about nervously. It had landed, almost certainly by magic, amidst their circle; but besides its explosive arrival, it remained eerily still. Among the winged folk, its inaction provoked both curiosity and mistrust.

“It’s human!”

“It dangerous!”

“It’s not dangerous!”

“It’s asleep,” Uva said. She was the most clever among them, and they were silent to listen, but she had no more answers.

“What if it’s a trick?” Nis asked, “How do we know it’s not like the others?”

“What do we do?” Eib asked. She was the smallest of their number, and the most timid.

“We have to kiss it,” Thret insisted. “That’s how you make humans wake up. You kiss them.”

“How do you know?” Uva demanded, fluttering higher than the rest.

“There was a maiden, once,” Thret replied, “A human maiden, who was sleeping so deep that she had to be woken up with a kiss. It’s the same with this one.”

It didn’t work. All of them tried, again, and in different combinations. Thret beat his wings faster to cover his blushing. “Any other ideas?”

“We can’t just leave it here...” Uva sighed.

Eib piped up, “Can we keep it?”
