I am posting this tonight so that I don't forget it. Tonight at the gym I ran three miles in 28:00. That's definitely 3.0 miles, at a pace of 9:20/mi.

I know it probably doesn't mean anything to anyone, but I am so, so proud of myself for this. This is a pretty big benchmark for me -- not only running 3.0mi without stopping, but actually doing it at a pace faster than my normal 6.0mph (10:00min/mi). It's not even like I'm training for anything in specific, but it's always nice to know that my efforts at the gym are actually doing something -- this is solid proof that I'm actually improving, getting healthier and getting more in shape.

So there, healthblog. This is the record! Let's see if I can beat it!

I am pleased with myself tonight. Carry on, LJ. Carry on.

of course, the bad part is that my lungs basically shut down after this. here's an example: take a couple shallow breaths, you know, where you're breathing but not so deeply that you can feel the air in the bottom of your lungs, right? that's what it feels like when my lungs shut down, except that it feels like that while I am trying desperately to haul in as much air as I can with every last bit of energy in my body. After running three miles. I don't know what causes it, but it's really scary when it happens. I almost passed out. Needless to say, I won't be repeating this feat any time soon... not until I'm a little more sure my poor lungs can take it!

Yay! I enjoy that you are one of my work-out friends that I can get geeky with over gym stuff (LIKE MY NEW IPOD SHOES WHAT WHAT). Your new record is really, really good!! I'm so proud. *sniffle*

OH MY GOD YOU HAVE THE IPOD SHOES??? HOW ARE THEY? I have been thinking about getting those for a WHILE because they look AWESOME, but I wanted to make sure they worked well before I sunk money into it...

Date: 2008-09-24 01:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] katmillia.livejournal.com
Well for me they are awesome, because I prefer running outside and I never had a gauge to tell me how far/fast I was going. And the shoes don't actually have anything in them... dang I had a post about this like 2 days back... all you have to do is get the Nike shoes with a + next to the swoosh. That means they can hold the chip. So you can get almost any Nike shoe you want (mine, for instance, are actually running shoes. my mom wants composite workout shoes). And you buy the chip separately, so it can go in any pair of Nike shoes that have the capability (so once the shoes are shot, just get more! or you can have more than one pair!). It stores your workout information, personal best, etc and can generate workouts for you. It also tells you your pace, distance traveled, and calories burned. And there is a power song that you can set on the middle button and any time you push it, the ipod will automatically go into that song.

Haha, I must have missed that post over the weekend. XD That's one of the reasons I don't run outside -- I can never tell how far or how fast I am going, and that's something that I like to keep track of. (The other reason is, of course, that I have 0 ligaments left in my right ankle, and running outside is like the #1 way to tear myself apart, so I have to wear an ankle brace, and running with the brace is a pain because it rubs and chafes and hurts.)

I need new shoes, anyway. HMMMMMMMM.

Date: 2008-09-24 01:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] katmillia.livejournal.com
Hahaha yeah I have been told quite sternly to NOT EXERCISE WITHOUT MY KNEE BRACE FOR SRS by my doctor so I know what you mean about the chafing and annoyingness. It HURTS to wear the brace. I mean, my knee stays in place, but the skin is all red and puffy and owie afterwards. Stupid brace.

OH BEE TEE DUBS I found out something new I can do with my knee! So I was lying down in my bed playing DS, and my legs were out straight in front of me, and I flexed my knee muscle because it hadn't been moved in awhile. And guess what it did?? POPPED MY KNEE OUT OF PLACE. lol it didn't hurt but it was that REALLY INTENSE PRESSURE when you are like OH GOD MY JOINT IS LITERALLY NOT WHERE IT SHOULD BE so I fixed it but whew. That was different. I can do it once a day, but I have to do it far apart otherwise I remember how uncomfortable it was. As long as I forget, I'll try it again just to see if it still works. It does.

...I am so envious!

I ran like...five minutes at the gym today (and walked the rest of a 35 minute endeavor), and I was like, "Basically, I am going to die right now!"

CONGRATULATIONS! :D

I SORT OF LOVE RUNNING <3

Haha. I am so lazy. I wouldn't work out at all if it weren't staving off the 600 diseases I will probably get in my old age! XD

I liked swimming. I really, really actually enjoyed that. And I do like running, but as I get older my lungs get more prone to dying, and I don't like that part.

Running to me is like alcohol, in a way. It's the thing that screwed my knee up originally. And now, when I do it, I know it's going to hurt my knee again, and cause pain and discomfort, but still, it's worth it because it feels good and I love it. So it's like drinking, when I regret it the next morning. Except I don't think I make out with random people while I'm running. That was a weird analogy. I might be partly delirious from exhaustion this morning.

From: [identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com
I think it makes sense. Running would be a lot more fun if you got to make out with random people while you were doing it.

I keep waiting for that "runner's high" that you're supposed to get once you hit 2-3 mi... unfortunately that's when my freaking lungs give up the ghost (thx grandpa) and instead of feeling all awesome and pumped, I am wheezing like a 60-year-old!

Date: 2008-09-24 02:47 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] darcenciel.livejournal.com
Unfortunately I never experienced the "runner's high" until I broke 6 miles...and then it's pretty rare.

Go you! Setting new records for yourself is awesome. :-)

That reminds me, I really need to start exercising again. Luckily my new apartment has a treadmill and elliptical in the basement, which is all kinds of convenient.

That is nice. My old apartment had a small gym (really, a couple machines) and it was really nice to just stop over there and do a quick mile or something.

AWESOME!!!!!! *BIG THUMBS UP*

I remember when I ran my first 3 miles without stopping. It was the greatest feeling. You're definitely a faster runner than me, though, I usually have to be running at top speed to break 30 min on 3 miles.

but yay!!! Maybe one day we can run a race together =P I do all my major road races in the winter.

I know you've said you inherited bad lungs, but that sounds an awful lot like asthma to me.

Congrats on your fitness achievement! Maybe a 5K could be in your future? I've had some fitness achievements lately too...I now go to pump class twice a week, and the added class is much harder than the one I've been going to all along. But today I increased the weight I was using for shoulders, and I am definitely noticing that my legs are getting used to being abused by endless squats and lunges. Yay! Also, I ran two miles w/o stopping both last week and the week before. I was probably going about 5 mph....I is slow!

Date: 2008-09-24 04:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com
Wait, does it really? I've never been tested for asthma and it would seriously be super awesome if this were something I could treat! BECAUSE IT IS REALLY SCARY, JENNY.

Also, I've been thinking about doing a 5K! not for any particular reason, mostly because it's easier to go to the gym if you have some kind of goal, even if it's a dumb goal. ;) We (i.e. the J-Squad) could totally train for one together, it would be hilarious!

Date: 2008-09-24 05:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jennyclarinet.livejournal.com
Yeah, I would get it checked out, because if you do have asthma, then you could totally just use an inhaler. I've heard that asthma attacks are scary, as you say.

What? The J-Squad do something that is good for us? That could be an idea. If you told me we were doing one, I would be motivated to train. I'd have to work on my speed though, so I can keep up with you. It sounds like that interval work you've been doing is helping with your speed.

It would make a ton of sense. Apparently one of the other symptoms (I just looked it up) is coughing fits with triggers, and I have two triggers: one's a cold trigger (like drinking anything slushee) and one's when I lay on my back. I WONDER. I mean, I hate to be like "I hope I have asthma" but it is at least a fixable problem!

I doubt I would go really fast for a race like that, though, because outdoors I have to wear this ganky ankle brace that chafes and hurts (but keeps me from tearing the remaining 0.5 ligaments I have in my ankle). But we could totally train for it! It might be awesome!

I told one of my adult students (who runs) today about possibly doing a 5K, and she was like, "yeah, and once you've done the 5K, you'll want to do a 10K! And after that, you'll want to do a marathon!" I was like, yeah, probably not. But maybe if we set next spring as a goal, we (I) could train over the winter and be ready! But I wouldn't do it w/o you!

I am very happy that my random stroke of genius may or may not help your breathing problem (and I hope it does!).

Most of them are at the end of this year, which I think would probably just kill me/us. However, the "Drumstick Dash 5K Run/Walk & Wishbone Dog Run/Walk" sounds intriguing just mainly because it has PUPPIES. However, running outside in November? I don't know about that!

Anyway, it looks as if fall/winter are the "main" times for events, at least in Cleveland/Akron... There isn't much in the spring or summer. (Summer at least makes sense, because who wants to run when it's hot?, but spring is still nice, guys!)
