It's interesting! A bit rushed in some places, but I'm liking it generally. Lots of sex, of course.

Woah now! HOW did I miss that she had a new book out!!!! I sic this series on Sev personally and then miss THIS?

Is it better/worse than Imriel's books? Although-- those were kind of all over the place themselves. So uh... feel free to use a specific Imriel book for comparison? XD

Original trilogy still my fave, so far =D

Well, there's no forced Imri/Sidonie romance (so far), so I'm going to say better! You can tell Carey is more comfortable in Moirin's mind than she ever was in Imri's. It's not as good as the original trilogy, but better than the latter half of Imri's -- of course, your mileage may vary, as I couldn't even finish Imri's trilogy.

So far, I'd say it's on the level with Scion - which I really liked - and better than Justice and Mercy.

Hm, sounds like a definite "get it from the library" case. If nothing else, I can always just roll around in Carey's language a little.

Though-- the Imri books! I LOVED Imriel so damn hard in the last of Phedre's books, hilarious. The first time I read Scion I actually near-hated it, but on reread I grew to like it a lot more. Especially, because I am shameless, the small bit of gay there (CAREY YOU GODDDAMN TEASE), although to be honest there wasn't really likable het to rival it.

I did manage to finish the trilogy, and actually, I think of the lot I liked the latter half of Justice the best. You know. The part that wasn't SIDONE SIDONIE SIDONIE but was more of a spiritual journey. The third book... I liked the premise, I liked that Sidonie got to be a little more badass but... whole trilogy was just kind of meh. Worth reading, but not the spectacular ride I'd expected.

Yeah. What helped me get through Scion was telling myself that Imri/Lucius was the true romantic subplot. I'm young enough to actually relate to the whole coming of age thing, so I loved the first half of Scion and was kind of nonplussed for the last half.

My issue with that trilogy was that while Imri and Dorelei's relationship had real development and showed them growing to love one another, Imri and Sidonie's just kind of... happened. The fact that they jumped back into bed so soon after Dorelei's death also bothered me to no end, but that's a personal quirk. With that in mind, I really couldn't bring myself to care about Imri and Sidonie's epic true love or whatever.

With the new book, though, Carey seems to have learned from her mistakes a little bit. There are some clumsy and quick romances, but they're more based on a teenager's tendency to fall in and out of love hastily than any sense of Elua-intended "true love". Also, the protag goes to the Carey!verse equivalent of China. I'm hoping that'll be awesome.

Gosh, I had loved Phedre/Joscelin so hard, I'd been hoping for more awesome romance. And I got Imriel/Sidonie. HM.

Yeah, uh, pretty much Imri/Lucius is the high point of Scion for me. I agree, first half was pretty entertaining.

Yeah I... had really mixed feelings about Imri and Sidonie. Sev and I actually had this long extended discussion of the Imriel books and it boiled down to a few factors for me. One was that Sidonie never really got a chance to shine for me. If I'd met her in a testosterone desert, she would have been a pretty kickass female character. But Carey's world is full of totally awesome women, and surrounded by them Sidonie just... didn't stand out.

Also, Phedre's story was literally of godlike proportions, while Imriel's was on the human level, and I think Carey just does epic better than she does human.

There's also-- Phedre's books included romance, but they didn't feel like they were about Phedre/Joscelin. That pairing was an organic part of the story. Compared to that, the Imri/Sidonie felt forced, and hogged the books, taking away delicious delicious worldbuilding.

And, well. Imriel/Sidonie was just not as rich and fleshed out. They were also so exclusive (not just sexually), so all about each other. Even Phedre and Joscelin, whose romance was, you know, truly epic, weren't exclusive even a little.

I'm a little biased in favour of Justice as well because (a) Maghuin Dhonn and ALBA IN GENERAL and (b) they went to Russia, which tickled me no end because I could understand everything they said XD

The Maghuinn Dhonn come back in a big way in the new book! There's a lot of attention focused on Alba in the beginning, which made me quite happy.

I... completely missed that Vralia was supposed to be Russia. I'm geographically ignorant, it seems. XD

It's not that I hate Justice - I love the first half of it, even the Imri/Sidonie parts (to an extent). My complaint stems from the fact that it was Imriel and Sidonie who didn't speak up and disobeyed Elua's precept, and Dorelei was the one who ended up dead because of it. Which is silly and as I said before, a personal quirk, because I realise that the situation was a lot more complicated them that. Still.
