I hear AVG is quite good.

Norton 09 is also significantly better than its predecessors and not horribly expensive, although definitely not free. XD

I use Avast. Last I checked it was the top of the free antivirus types, but AVG antivirus and Avira antivirus have held that place too.

For trojans, rootkits, etc, I typically use Unhackme, but don't use that unless you're sure of what you're doing/your next option is nuking your hard drive. I'm sure of what I'm doing with the program but if you're not careful, you can delete essential system files.

For anti-spyware, I use Lavasoft's Ad-Aware.

Ditto for Avast. Though I also sometimes use Trend Micro's "HouseCall" which runs in a browser (with a Java applet).

I totally read that wrong, and was about to say...you're having trouble finding free software that is virus free?

I agree with both of the actually helpful answers, though.

AVG is the only one of the free ones i'd trust in the consumer sector.

Bump for AVG. It's not as shiny as Norton, but hey the shit is free.

I third AVG's free branch. That + Windows Defender = I haven't actually been bothered by viruses or spyware in about three years.

Erm, first time commenter here, (I'm a random fan from FF.net) but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is fantastic. It's what the pros use to clean off infested PCs. And it's free. Cleans off all kinds of stuff, and it's simple to use.
