  1. Let's say Sev is thinking of asking for either an X-Box or a PS3 for Christmas. Tell me about both of them: pros and cons, games I can get, which you would recommend for someone who is kind of a shitty gamer anyway. Let's go!

  2. I have a bit of code I wrote a while ago that could potentially be used for a fic exchange. I'm not sure it's going to work for DOINK in any real context, but I've been itching to try it out on a VERY SMALL and VERY UNOFFICIAL scale. Basically how it works is: every person leaves 3 prompts; I make a master list of the anonymous prompts by number; you secretly send me 3 prompts you're willing to write; the code will assign you 1 prompt to write in a way that best covers as many participants as possible. Would anybody be interested in helping me test it out on a small unofficial scale? I could call it SevMas or something. My own personal boner exchange. I'm looking for a group of people, more than 5 but less than 15. Very low key, no promises, all I want is to run my damn code like a real loser, Sev/EXCEL OTP forever.

  3. I have been feeling very strangely fannish lately, probably because I've been imbibing on a lot more source material than usual: this is mostly the fault of [livejournal.com profile] safety_caesars/[personal profile] vrazdova. We are replaying FFX; I started a random replay of FFVIII when I was sick; we just watched Gundam Wing and I am rewatching it in English while I run. I'm kind of on fandom overdose. Any thoughts or liveblogs or meta posts or, god, I don't know whatever that people want to see? And/Or: if I start spamming my thoughts on GW episodes and writing massive essays on Quistis/Rinoa, please don't defriend me right away.

I have both! I love them both! In terms of exclusives, I probably prefer the 360 (Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant). Most of the things I've really enjoyed on PS3 are multiplatform.

360-specific recs: Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, Magna Carta 2, Mass Effect (+ 2 and 3)
360 sort-of recs: Fable (not my style but you might like it), Infinite Undiscovery is both cool and awful at the same time; I'm having fun but you might not.
PS3-specific recs: inFAMOUS. I hear that Resonance of Fate and Valkyria Chronicles are super badass, but haven't played them.
Both Systems: Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed (+ sequels), FF13

A note: Mass Effect (also by Bioware, sci-fi where Dragon Age is fantasy) is a shooter, so I make paladin play it for me. ME2 is out on PS3 and comes with a sort of playable comic so you can get teh plot of ME1, but I'd sort of recommend doing the whole shebang. Because Mass Effect is awesome.

ALSO: yes I would do this miniexchange.

Yeah, that playable comic sort of skips an entire freakin' planet. I was disappointed by that. (Also, thank goodness for Casual difficulty settings, for serious.)

I can tell you why I bought an Xbox 360 instead of PS3, and that is mostly because the overwhelming majority of my gamer pals went that way, and I often like to game socially. For exclusives, it's fun to go to the Wikipedia lists and sort by the appropriate column. I like to do that and sigh quietly over the PS3 games I'd like to play but can't afford a second system for, though I have no regrets.

Also, Kinect > Playstation Move (although the Move controller does look hilariously like a vibrator, so possibly this is actually advantage: PS3).

And I would love to jump in on the miniexchange! YAY TESTING

There've always been more games for xbox that I was interested in, so.

One fact though is that the controller for the xbox handles better than that of the ps3. It's got more heft to it, isn't quite as flimsy and the odd placement of the joysticks really works.
On the other hand, the blu-ray player seems to be a big motviator for a lot of people I know with a ps3.

Out of order!

2. I'm in for the Guinea Pig Exchange!

1. Hmm, let's see. (Keep in mind I've tried more PS3 games than 360, since we actually own the PS3. The 360 belongs to our roommate, who is cool and lets us play it whenever, but we're still limited by his game selection.)

Standouts for the PS3: Little Big Planet, Folklore, InFAMOUS 1 + 2. Uncharted looks pretty awesome as well, but I've only seen it played briefly.
Standouts for the 360: Mass Effect. I've played ME2 with and without importing save files, and the importing does improve things. (If only they'd come up with a way to transfer save files across systems... I'm amazed no one's tried to crack that.)
[Standouts for both: Mass Effect 2 (and presumably 3,) Bioshock 1 and 2, Dragon Age: Origins]
Also, the PS3 does have a decent selection of older downloadable games available, but I don't know whether or not the 360 offers a similar service. I don't have an account so I haven't been able to check.

4. OH GOD RETAIL IN THE HOLIDAYS THAT IS WHAT IS UP
...other than that, not much. Things are mostly pretty good!

3.
And/Or: if I start spamming my thoughts on GW episodes and writing massive essays on Quistis/Rinoa, please don't defriend me right away.

._.

...Yeah, no fear of that.

Seriously, if you were to write a meta post about just about anything about FFX or FFVIII I would read it and blab about it and probably write a response to it myself! (I can't say much about GW, though, I only ever watched it when it was first on Cartoon Network, and then just bits and pieces.)

We have a PS3 which I use only rarely, because I play all of about 3 games a year; I'm a huge Metal Gear fan so there wasn't really any chance I'd be leaving Team Sony just yet. I've also heard that FFXIII is much prettier on PS3 because of the blu-ray drive; not sure how many other multiplatform games that goes for.

1. Me and the Mancakes didn't like the 360 because it seemed like we had to pay a lot of extra money to Microsoft for more than basic features. (We were really looking into multitasking capabilities.) I know we wanted to stream Netflix, but that took a special Xbox membership in addition to an existing Netflix membership! So that ended up being a no go. It's a bit of a bummer, because I really really like the Halo games, I just can't justify buying a new system :/

I like our PS3. I like it a lot. I like that it can do multiple things in addition to just gaming, without much of that extra money baggage the 360 had going for it. I like that I can purchase classic PS games from the PS store and have it downloaded TO MY PS3 -- thus eliminating the need for multiple game discs. Most of my older PS games are in Little Broski's custody, and it's not like he takes good care of them anyway.
Downsides: It won't play most PS2 games. Uh. Have I mentioned I have a huge lady boner for my PS3?

2. LIN IS GOING TO BE CHICKEN SHIT FOREVER

3. YAY META POSTS! I've been working on an FFVIII fic with the hopes of, you know, actually posting, and I HAVE ALL THE QUESTIONS.

2. I love the idea of the beta-testing exchange in theory! But I don't know that I have enough fandoms in common with the rest of your Circle/Flist to make it work. Hmm.

3. I WOULD READ ALL THE FFX META YOU CAN IMAGINE.

DID YOU KNOW, Quistis/Rinoa actually has more support than i thought it did? Now that isn't hard because I thought it had ZERO support (other than HOT), but upon replaying I am actually... seeing it?

Date: 2011-12-05 01:04 pm (UTC)

I've seen very, very little Quistis/Rinoa stuff out there. I've actually seen more Quistis/Tifa, come to think about it, which makes no sense other than hot. But in a way, I can kind of see it in the game, especially towards all things space-rescue related. And in the mansion. Hmmm....

And here I was, thinking it was just Squall that made her get all antsy.

I have a feeling I'm not leaving the house today. Time to start yet another replay.

What kind of gaming does he do? ie RP, 1st person shooter, sports games? I believe the costs of games are pretty compatible between the two systems.

I did a rewatch of GW last year and I really enjoyed it.

It's for me XD I am a horrible gamer, though, and I mostly play RPGs pretty much exclusively. I've played other kinds of games and I'd love to branch out but I really suck at finding time for gaming. Which is why I really only want to buy one system, because it makes no sense for me to own two really expensive systems I don't play enough. XD

I just watched it for THE FIRST TIME, and I'll admit: I was really lost for about the first 50%. Having gotten to the end and basically BECOME OBSESSED, I want to rewatch it like immediately so that I can answer burning questions like "What the fuck happened in Luxembourg???" when I'm trying to write something more descriptive than shameporn for it. I watched it in Japanese with subtitles; I've downloaded the English dub for my rewatch, because I'm interested to see what the dub voices are like, and also because I'm interested to see if I understand more in English.

I've seen the series like five or six times and I always see something new every time I watch it.

PS3 is probably the one you want since the graphics are supposedly better and Sony usually focuses more on the RPs. What I would do is research the games you would like to play and see which system they are available on and which has the better controls and graphics for each game because some games play better on one system or the other.

Date: 2011-12-05 02:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com
It's a really complicated story, and I spent most of my time being gay for all the characters, rather than trying to follow all the details -- I found it really hard to keep track of things like WHERE shit was happening or WHERE they were coming from and jesus is this a colony or earth, oh my god, why are they everywhere OH WAIT IT'S QUATRE *STOPS PAYING ATTENTION*

so I really want to watch it again and pay more attention to that kind of stuff.

Yeah, PS3 also has a BluRay, and -- I don't have the world's nicest TV ever, but it's decent, and having a bluray player would be cool if I was already going to spend the money. I'll just have to look up the games and see what's what.

I didn't even notice Trowa the first time I watched it because I was so focused on Wufei and knowing what was happening plot wise.

Since you like RPs if you are into Noir you should seriously check out LA Noire. It is one of the most amazing games I've seen and the play is wide open so you can replay it over and over again with variations on how it flows.

Date: 2011-12-05 03:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com
Whereas I was kind of the opposite -- I was trying really hard to keep track of the pilots that were together, and since Wufei is kind of doing his own thing for a long time I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE WHAT HE DID FOR THE FIRST LIKE 20 EPS. I shit you not. Hooray for being able to rewatch, LOLSOB.

Oooooh, thank you, i will look that up! Have you played any of the Final Fantasy games? Those are kind of my comfort zone, although I'd love to play more stuff.

Wufei is definitely a man with his own mind.

I actually felt almost bad because I got to the end of the game and I seriously liked Wufei - that thing with Treize was like *SOBS FOREVER* - but I felt like I didn't understand his character at all in a way that meant I could write it. Because I had been so lost.

Date: 2011-12-05 04:32 am (UTC)

ACTUALLY I HAVE A POLL ON THAT. CURRENT RESULTS:

Jecht Spheres -- which one did Auron hide from Tidus?

Auron singing "I am the very model of a modern major " while drunk. 26.3%
Braska's ballet performances. 8%
Auron upchucking on Braska during the ferry ride to Besaid. 33.6%
Total Votes: 137

BUT SERIOUSLY, WE NEED TO HEAR EPIC THOUGHTS ON FFX. ALL OF THEM.

QUISTIS/RINOA, see, here's the thing -- I really adore that pairing but I thought I had made it up. HOWEVER upon replaying this game, I am seeing hints. Obviously it's not canon, and it gets drowned by Squall/Rinoa, but I am like LOOK THERE'S ACTUAL KIND OF EVIDENCE FOR MY CRACK FEMMESHIP, I WIN.

1. I would totally recommend the x-box. I have one and I love it. Game wise, I'm not sure if these are available on PS3 aswell or not, but I can rec you my favourite games on x-box. Dragon Age Origins, Fable II, Lost Odyssey, Resonance of fate, The Last Remnant are all Rpg games, or kind of rpg games. If you're after a bash the crap out of shit, rip things apart and generally go batshit crazy game, then Prototype is awesome. For childish, nerdy fun (and a great one for two player drunken shinanagins) any of the Lego series games are great.

2. As for SevMas, I know nothing of code at all, but I'd be willing to help in any way I could. Just give us a yell if you need me.

3. Feel free to rave at will. I've never watched Gundam Wing. I'm only familiar with Gundam from doujinshis and... well... they are all just smut and no storyline. The boys have very nice asses though. :)

I don't own a 360. I can't tell you very much about it and say I'm accurate. The main things I know are that you have to pay a subscription that's ~$60 per year to play online and have access to demos and such, but their marketplace updates daily. I had also heard that they make it really, really hard to end your subscription for Live, but they may have fixed that by now. Oh, and for some reason 360 seems to be a haven for all the "gurl gamers" to flock and advertise their existence as gurl gamers. I never see gurl gamers heavily advertising that they have a PS3. There are definitely women that play games on the PS3, but they don't heavily advertise the fact that they're female and play video games. Just an observation!

I have more I can say about a PS3. Playing video games online is free, unless the developer has chosen to make it a subscription service. The PS3 has backwards compatibility for PS1 games, but only some models have PS2 backwards compatibility, and all the models with that functionality are old, probably costly by now, and lower on the hard drive space. The good news when it comes to HD space, at least for those same older models, is that you can very easily switch out the hard drive in the PS3 with a laptop one, but you would need to remember to format the hard drive to FAT and have a device (e.g. flash drive) with the latest PS3 firmware. That sounds harder than it really is.

I could give a lot of suggestions for PS3 games if you got one. The PS3 has quite a few exclusives. Oh, and the PS3 can play Blu-Ray and DVD discs regardless of what version PS3 you get. Making best use of Blu-Ray requires an HDMI cable and HDTV, but Blu-Ray is definitely an option.

I'd like to say that I'm up for your code, but I already have way too many problems completing fics as-is, so I don't think I'd be able to handle needing to complete prompts.

As for what's up, same as usual and what I write on my LJ! And write whatever you want on yours!
