Writing an actual polyamory fic in which Korra dates both Mako and Bolin, and it's fucking awesome, because they're brothers who totally trust each other and Korra is just so badass she needs two goddamned awesome boyfriends. It would be a fic where it WORKS and this is so what I have always wanted to see in my life I want to write it so bad Mako can maybe date the other girl too, I have no problem with her, I just don't know much about her


2. MAKO/KORRA/BOLIN AND I DON'T GIVE A FUCK THREESOMES AND INCEST ARE TWO OF MY FAVORITE THINGS, SO THREESOME = INCEST (THRINCEST???) = I AM GONNA FLOOD THIS FANDOM AND PROBABLY BE BANNED BEFORE SEASON ONE IS EVEN FINISHED: ZERO FUCKS

For once, I am watching something YA aimed (cause let's face it this is aimed for the tweens+ moreso than the youngins this time around) with an obvious love triangle with boys I don't hate.

Though.

Can we stop with the action heroines and love triangles please, YA everything? Either poly that, broship that, or gtfo.

Yeah, I am not necessarily a fan of the way the romantic angle and ~love triangle~ showed up so early and as so much of this episode. But I'm also really wary because I am so, so, so tired of hearing how 'romance ruins a story', because, you know, let's keep that 'girly shit' out of there. So I really want to defend it, too.

I think in this case my problem comes more from thinking is was weirdly written and too overblown, though, rather than misogyny. I'm also a little sick of the One True Love Trope and I don't think that's helping me much.

I just think the awkward ~love triangle~ is kind of a trend? I mean seriously. Look at anything that's come out in the last few years (books, shows, movies) with a female protag. I think it's just a case where people are just getting lazy with their romance angles; "oh they seem to like love triangles, let's put one in".

Like I forget the name of the book, but it left an impression on me as a kid/tween because it had a "I want to be a knight, let's disguise as a boy!" type heroine, who then got involved with a prince because he discovered she was girl and was into that (like not just kiss and make out they were sleeping with each other and she had magical birth control) and then broke up with him when they got a bit older and he was like "well better get off your magic birth control when we get married cause babies" and she was like "no not babies now I want to ride around the countryside fightings things, bai".

And then she helped some really hot, super femme chick (who was also badass, but differently) and was like "dude you should hook up with my ex, you'd be a good queen because you would deal with people without punching them in the face" and then ended up with some older pirate dude who had been a friend for years that subtle flirted with her and it was awesome.

THE POINT OF THIS LONG RETELLING is that there have existed better ways to handle Action Girls and Monogamy (because they will pretty much never do poly if it's not aimed at adults) in the YA sphere and they aren't REALLY that hard to do. And I guess I expect more out of the Avatar team because they have hit a lot of things better.

tl;dr "put a love triangle in it" is the romance equivalent of "put a bird on it" for hipsters.

It's not the romance that ruins it, it's handling it in an anvilicious manner that does. That is annoying that people can't see the difference there. Romance that builds up and is a plot intertwined with the main plot can be really fucking awesome! Hell most of my favorite heroines have a romantic subplot (or plot), especially what I read growing up. There's a difference, people.

Also, god, meeting your "soulmate" at 16 is a terrible terrible idea except in rare exceptions (my friend Ardy did that). Been there, divorced that!

I am not so much for the threesome thing because incest is one of my top three Do Not Wants, but Korra dates Mako and Bolin and Mako can still be involved with Asami: YES PLEASE. I am so, so tired of There Can Be Only One romantic storytelling, especially when the implication is that the person you like when you are 16 must be your soulmate. Sigh. I mean, overall I love this show, but.

This: THIS is what I am really excited about and really want to get into, because even as progressive as the show is I am pretty sure they will not really go there, but! I would LOVE to see Korra just being awesome and dating them both and being honest like, hey, this is where I am, this is gonna happen! I also tire so much of the Only One For Me tropes and I'm just. In my head it's already fixed. NOT SORRY.

Yeah, I really do not have high hopes for multi-dating/open relationship on the show, because mainstream US TV. Avatar is progressive in many other ways, but.... alas.

But we'll always have fandom.

I keep having these mixed feelings about it. Like, I'm cycling through:

- "Cool! This show seems aimed at a little bit older of an audience, so they're gonna do more romantic/dating stuff with the older characters. That's interesting! Yay!"
- "WHY DID THAT ENTIRE EPISODE HAVE TO BE ABOUT ~LOVE TRIANGLES~ AND ~~DRAAAAAMA~~. UGH!"
- "Does 'casual dating' really not exist in this world?????"


I am also really, really, really sick of the attitude (on, like, Tumblr, and in other internet places) that 'romance' or 'love stories' 'weaken the plot', because, you know, let's get that 'girly shit' out of here, right? So I feel like my knee-jerk instinct is to defend it -- even though I myself wasn't a fan. But I think my complaints come from how early it seemed to come on (I felt little-to-no buildup in the Korra/Mako way) and how it was written (AN ENTIRE EPISODE ON VERY SILLY AWKWARD TEENAGE LURVE)... but again, I still feel like I have to defend it because these complaints can come from a sexist place.

Polyfun aside (oh, is a third option is a serious option for our heros!?), I hate it when romance is suddenly shoo'd in like this. I wasn't expecting an ep like this until... way later. At least when the series got in the double digits. Even after the new girl came into the picture because hey, dating, biggie whoop, right? It felt really forced.

I don't feel like they gave it enough buildup for the entire thing to be played with so much ~drama~./ Okay, maybe the Bolin-->Korra side had some strength to it, I totally believed that. But the entire Mako/Korra thing, it felt like it came out of nowhere, or almost nowhere. Maybe because there's also a significant difference between "I didn't think I liked you until you got a girlfriend but now maybe I do" and "WE ARE MEANT TO BE TOGETHER" and they went with the very dramatic latter and I was kind of ugh about it.

But now I really do want all the fic in which Korra dates them both and Mako can still date Prettyface (...Asami?) and everyone is actually a happy grownup about it. CAUSE IT'S FICTION AND THAT NEVER HAPPENS

I'm not coherent enough just now to really put all my thoughts into it, but here's what I've decided:

The episode made two awesome people look like complete jackasses.

Resulting in two others receiving the fallout undeservedly and/or will be receiving it (I"m lookin atyou Bolin and Asami).

Bolin was totally made both the best person and yet the one who suffered the most.

And Pema gave the worst advice. SEriously. THe most stereotypical, unencouraging advice ever.

I am probably helping like a kitty here, but just wanted to say that even though I know next to nothing about Korra*, I would so read those potential fics.

*Everything I know about Korra, I've gotten from tumblr, and we all know how accurate that can make things.
