today's tunes are brought to you by potato under the covers

so after last week i went for a little dive into darker electro-pop, and spotify was happy to oblige almost immediately with a great find i've latched onto and listened to all week long:

Artist: Lydia Ainsworth
Album/Song to try: Darling of the Afterglow is the only one i've listened to so far; don't know it well enough to really point out highlights, but "Into the Blue" is a clear hit IMO, also "What Is It?"
Style: spotify says "dark electro art pop" and i'm not sure i can say better
Thoughts: i love the drums and the orchestral bits here, the bright piano alongside her mysterious lyrics and wonderful voice. these are songs that have a lot going on behind the vocals, and i love the rhythms to it and how the layers add. reminds me occasionally of Banks.

so that's new-to-me music; i'm now going to throw out an old-to-me artist that everyone needs to listen to like yesterday or get off my flist...

Artist: Dessa
Album/Song to try: A Badly Broken Code, "Children's Work", "Dixon's Girl", "Dutch", "Alibi"; Parts of Speech, "Skeleton Key", "Fighting Fish", "Sound the Bells"; Chime, "Ride", "5 out of 6"
Special Callout: "The Bullpen" and "Fire Drills" should specifically start out any angry-lady-feminist playlist you have
Style: great lyrical rap over catchy pop beats, with a voice to match
Thoughts: IF YOU HAVE NOT TRIED DESSA, DO SO IMMEDIATELY. Her rap is my favorite, although her other pop is still great. the way she strings words together fits so well you wish you knew the lyrics immediately so that you can do it with your own mouth too. perfect imagery, raw expressions, turns of phrase, and song construction. she's got it all. do yourself a favor.

FYI, i'm now creating a spotify playlist for all these recommendations; it takes me quite a few listens to determine how i really feel about stuff, so i'm not ignoring your suggestions, just taking my time with it!

your cat today is the inestimable Potato Poof Marmalade Dragomire. He is a half-maine-coon absolutely soft fluffo who is scared of nearly everything. he really does like to crawl under blankets and into covers and cuddle there, it's adorable

Potato is cute!

I'm back with more recommendations from the FFXI soundtrack! This time it's the Rise of the Zilart expansion OST. This is my very favorite Final Fantasy OST; I listen to it far too often. It will be hard just to pick a few tracks. You can listen to the full soundtrack here:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9A9F2ECC9FA6517B

Sadly I don't remember much about playing this expansion, because we rushed it in a weekend so we could get to endgame. I do remember enjoying it, though, and the music is SO GOOD.

Yuhtunga Jungle
https://youtu.be/wRkH7OuFtyo
I was torn between Kazham and this as my first pick because I really adore Kazham, but ultimately decided on this instead as it sets the mood better. The Yuhtunga Jungle is full of Tonberries, Malboros, and Mandragoras all ready to kill you. This song has a very jungle-y vibe to it.

The Sanctuary of Zi'tah
https://youtu.be/3TnSMXcp2Hg
Contrasting the above, we have the Sanctuary of Zi'Tah back on the mainland (the jungle is on an island). Zi'Tah is a forest full of large trees, and it'd be tranquil if it wasn't for all the monsters there. This song plays up that tranquility.

Fighters of the Crystal

I love this song, and I lack the words to explain why. I just know that every time I listen to this OST, I sit up and take notice of this song.
