well HELLO FRIENDS????? after MUCH delay which is MY OWN FAULT, i am here to present to you the tiny fandom event of the year: Final Fantasy Kiss Battle 2022!!
This event is open to everyone, even if we aren't DW circlefriends! (feel free to friend me too; i promise i'm not crazy that's a lie but at least i'm sometimes funny). If you aren't on DW, you can still play via anon or OpenID!
The Kiss Battle is simple. Players leave prompts in comments under each specific fandom, using generalized fandom nomenclature: a relationship of some sort, and a concept to inspire other players.
- For romantic relationship kisses, we use X / Y
- For platonic relationship kisses, we use X & Y
- Absolutely open to relationships with more than 2 people involved! X / Y / Z (/ A / B ...) welcome to this party!
- Prompts can be a word, a sentence, an image, a song lyric; it's a suggestion, rather than a request
- it's a kiss battle! there will be smooches!
Players then go looking for smoochin' prompts they'd like to fill. Fills can be fic, art, interpretive dance, whatever you're inspired to; they can be filled in a responding comment, or as a link (to AO3, tumblr, etc). FILLS GOTTA HAVE A KISS IN 'EM. IT'S A KISS BATTLE. What counts as a "kiss" is up to you, though -- you can be creative!
- Fills should use the comment header to let people know what the fill is; please use a format like "X / Y, (title), (rating), (any content warnings that might apply)"
- "Aerith/Tifa, memorial, G"
- "Cloud/Squall, just in time, R (blood)"
- Prompts can be filled multiple times! Don't worry if someone got there first; we love Two Cakes up in this event! The more kisses we get, the better!
- You can fill as anon if you want/need for any reason
- You can of course crosspost anywhere you'd like
It's a very simple game, and is meant to be played in good faith without anybody being a shitbag about pairings or characters. We're all too old for this.
FANDOM LINKS Fandoms with compilations and expansions should fall into their titled macrofandom. For example:
- FFXIII also includes FFXIII-2 and Lightning Returns (FFXIII-3)
- FFX also includes X-2
- FFIV includes the After Years
If you need to specify a certain microfandom / singular canon, please do so in the prompt or in the comment header!

Balthier/Fran - Supporting Role, T (canonical peril, end of game spoilers)
Date: 2022-02-27 10:17 pm (UTC)Balthier produces a pocket mirror he'd only replaced the other night. How vividly he recalls Fran pointing it out from the displayed wares, teasing "you like shiny things, don't you?" Now, it only fogs with her inaudible breath.
Potion, then, not a phoenix down. Excellent. He's only carrying two of the latter from their stores, and they still have a ship crashing on their afternoon's dance cards.
Balthier hefts Fran under her arms, her head lolling back alarmingly over his shoulder. Potion and its derivatives can be taken topically but it's only passing effective when there's no open wound. He uncaps the bottle, and uses his distaff hand to hold Fran's head steady.
Would the magic wake her before the potion drowns her? Balthier's a pirate, not a gambler.
The potion lights up his mouth.
One sip, two, and all his aches of battle ease; Fran's lips remain slack against the medicated press of his own. Three and four and his mouth begins to burn, his skin prickling beneath his clothes everywhere her warm, heavy body weighs upon his.
Fran could be sleeping. Balthier is hyper-aware that she is not.
After years of shared close quarters, sharing a ship, sharing tents, he knows how light a sleeper Fran is. He knows the range of those long-plumed ears. After last night--how can it have only been last night?--Balthier also knows how Fran feels sleeping in his arms.
With every breath, every burning mouthful, he thinks, hopes, begs: Now.
Now, Fran's eyes will open and she'll tease him mistaking her for some silvan nymph to be woken with a kiss. About resting on his laurels. Resting on the job.

Any moment now, Fran's eyes will dip to his lap and she'll chide him for celebrating too soon. She'll tease him about making her swallow, wiping spilled potion from her chin and neck. (Half the bottle gone now, and as much in his mouth as hers.)
So much has changed between them since yesterday. Not more than ten minutes ago, Balthier would have said anything would be better than a repeat of their exchange atop the Pharos, but even that would be better than this.
"I don't have to remind you to hold on, do I, Fran?"
Her arm taut about his back shocks Balthier silent, breath caught as Fran's dark eyes blink up at him. She licks her lips, and raises an eyebrow; he grins back and passes her potion bottle to finish.
"Waiting for your cue?"
"They call for you."
As first words go, disappointingly practical, but Fran has a point. Balthier is still on speaker with the combined fleets of three nations, their tinny status updates competing over shrieks of metal. Sweeter words can wait for privacy and somewhat lower stakes.
"You know how it is," Balthier says, sliding his free arm under her legs to lift. "The leading man's always in demand."
Fran makes a thoughtful noise, tucking her face into his neck. "I'd say you're in more of a supporting role."
Now, that's the Fran he knows.
