What about Fan History? I know the woman who runs it gets a lot of flack, but I'm on her flist and she is really a nice person and she's been trying to get FF people to edit the FF section for quite a while now.

I honestly don't think after what happened with her outing another fan as well as many people discrediting her wiki, that Fan History is ever going to get much use. There's too much bad blood surrounding it.

I'm so confused about the whole thing - is Novik's transparency re: OTW because she was outed? I don't know, I knew her fannish identity a long time before I ever correlated it with Laura Hale. I thought she had come out of the fandom closet herself.

I'm worried that her wiki is getting discredited because of really old bad blood. Laura went up against Cassie Claire and heidi8 years ago when the plagiarism thing just started, and I think fandom is still holding it against her.

I know she wants to monetize fanhistory, but seriously, someone would have done it eventually.

Novik has always been out as a fan and a fanfic writer, but she doesn't make her fannish handle public. It's a pretty open secret in fandom, but that's not the same thing. She has asked that her RL and fan identities not be linked in any way that can be Googled, and this was the line that Hale crossed, repeatedly.

Hale's bad behavior has been well documented by many sources, including some hostile to Cassie Claire and Heidi, so I don't think this is grudge wank. I agree with bottle_of_shine: Fan History has become poison to too many people (some refuse even to link to it), and I would rather put my efforts into a fresh start.

I worry about OTW though too. I look at the list of people on the board, and I don't recognize any of them, and I'm no spring chicken in fandom. I worry about their commitment to anime/video game fandom. If they get interviewed by the media, and are asked 'what do you think about Sailor Moon tentacle porn?' are they going to claim 'oh no, that's not *our* kind of thing'? I don't think OTW represents me because I look at Harry Potter fandom with the same disdain that book fandomers look down on anime with.

I worry that there's a secret group of people close to the board that know the fannish identities of those on the board that say they don't want it known. I've been around the block and I know that so many projects like this are filled with elitism and if you aren't close to the main players you don't have a say or you are kept in the dark.

The thing I like about Laura Hale is her transparency. I've never had any doubt as to her identity, she's never seemed bigger than life (yeah, sure, I can come out of nowhere and chat astolat up on her journal.) She's accessible, she isn't a BNF, and I empathize with her because fandom has jumped down her throat whenever she's made a mistake. She's the underdog, she's the anti-elite, and I want her to win because of it. I've never seen OTW come out and say 'we want Final Fantasy fans to edit our wiki!' when Laura has done just that in several communities.
