...ESPECIALLY THOSE OF YOU LOOKING FOR A LITTLE EXTRA CASH?

I have a friend at work who is looking to have a graphic reworked so that it can be printed on a t-shirt. In order to be printed on a shirt, there needs to be a little bit of space between sections of different colors, apparently, so that the colors don't bleed together when printed. The original also uses a lot of colors, and I think that would need to be cut a little bit so that there are only 1-2 blues and 1-2 greens in the actual image.

He is totally willing to pay! Right now he's looking for a QUOTE from someone as to how much it would cost to have the graphic reworked.

More under the cut --

Jon's exact words: "Krash,
Here is the image I wanted to be able to put on a t-shirt. I was told that there should be a little distance between each color so there is no bleeding. I basically want this image to be clear with no pixelation and some distance between each color. The final image should be in JPEG format. I am just looking for a quote right now. Thanks for your help.

When we talked about it in person we also discussed cutting down on the number of colors in the final image. I told him that printing shirts with lots of different colors was expensive, and while he didn't seem overly concerned about the cost he DID say that it would be nice to reduce the overall number of colors in the image. I'll probably leave that up to suggestions from my wise F-List about this.

Anyway. I could probably take a stab at it, and maybe do a decent job, but I know there are a lot of you out there who kind of do this thing for a living ([livejournal.com profile] katmillia, I am initially thinking of you) and could probably do waaayyyy better than I could.

If you're interested, just let me know how much you'd charge so I can get back to Jon about it. Thanks! XD

I'll let Katy or others who do this for a living have first stab at this, but if no one wants to take it on, I also worked as a graphic designer for a while, so I'd be able to help. ^_^

.... uh, I put together books for a living? I would have no clue what to tell him cost-wise. If it's in photoshop, I would think all you would need to do is "erase" a line of color around all the edges so there is a white edge there... but I don't really know? I'm awful with stuff that actually gets printed, because I don't know how high the t-shirts bleed margins are or anything like that.

Haha, I thought your degree was in graphic design? Anyway, I think he wants a complete redo of the design. I just don't know how to do curves very well in Photoshop - I really suck at them. D:

Uh no. My degree was a generic art degree with a journalism degree tacked on that sort of MADE a graphic design type thing but more in the sense of magazine layouts and page layouts rather than small graphics.

Doing it with the pen tool would really be the only way I can see getting the curves right, but I no longer have illustrator since my computer died and I had to reformat the harddrive, so... the curves really suck in photoshop, you really need illustrator to get them right.

I have Illustrator and am pretty good at it, if you want me to take a shot at it?

If you would like! How much would you charge for that kind of thing?

It doesn't look super hard, just a little bit time consuming to do all those curves. How does $40 sound to him?

From: [identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com
XD Let me ask. I assume that would be totally fine as an estimate (if it ends up being harder, obvs you can charge him more).

Talked with Jon, he says it is probably an excellent price - he's getting confirmation with the captain of his boat (this is the logo for the boat he sails with), and will get back to me soon!

YOU ARE AWESOME.

Oh wow, he sails?? Awesome. XDDDDD I sail too, I was wondering what the shirt design was for!! Yay!

He does sail! I have never been out on their big boat, but a friend of his owns a smaller sailboat and took us out on Lake Erie last summer... it was awesome!

Also, Jon says it's a go. He is going to give me the $40, and then I can either send it to you or PayPal you or ...whatever you want. Just let me know!

I just read the comment below that the image is copyrighted...not sure if he still wants to go ahead with it? It makes me kind of nervous to be modifying a copyrighted image.*

*as for something like this that is not fanart!

Yeeeeah... I just, uh, informed him of the fact that it was copyrighted, too. He's going to get in touch with his printer and see - I don't think the PRINTER would be keen on reproducing a copyrighted image, either. It's not a big deal if you don't want to do it, seriously. It's up to you two.

He had no idea. Weirdo. D:

Yeah, it makes me a little uncomfortable. I would have no problem if he wanted me to make a new image or logo kind of in the spirit of that one or whatever, but I don't really want to touch all the legal stuff associated with me modifying someone else's art for profit (and I would also feel bad as an artist).

If he would like to talk about an original logo or whatever, that would be cool though.

And yeah sorry!! O_o I was kind of excited about doing this too, it seemed like a fun project. :( Hope it's not too much of a hassle on your end. I feel bad.

Well, the shirts aren't for profit - they're just for his boat - but he's still a little weirded out. I think he's going to go talk to his boat and some other people, and I'll get back to you about what gets decided!

I'M SORRY TOO.

Yeah, I've heard the same thing about Illustrator. I do not have it, and I suck at curves too much to even want to try it. It would come out looking like MS Paint.

Curves suck especially hard if you're just using a mouse. I bought a Wacom tablet last year and it's the best thing that ever happened to my art <3 <3

Oooh, I bought a tablet last year and I still don't know how to do curves with it. Then again what I don't know about art would fill libraries, haha.

Tablets are awesome!! You can always practice in Photoshop too. It's kind of a pain at first getting used to the pen tool, but after I got the hang of it, vector curve shading in Photoshop is a lot of fun.

I've only ever done free hand stuff, because I kind of stare at the pen tool all "O_______o I DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE YOU". I will have to experiment with it. Do you have any tips?

Date: 2008-08-21 02:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] darcenciel.livejournal.com
Start out small! The problem I have with a lot of online pen tool tutorials is that they are like O HAI GUYZ TODAY WE WILL USE THE PEN TOOL FIRST WE WILL TELL YOU EVERYTHING THE PEN TOOL DOES AND OVERWHELM YOUR BRAIN AND THEN WE WILL BE DOING REALLY ADVANCED STUFF CUZ YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE OSMOSED THE ENTIRE TUTORIAL INTO YOUR BRAIN AFTER 5 MINUTES.

What I started out doing is just using the shapes tool in Photoshop to make a whole bunch of circles and ovals and things that have curvy edges. Then I went in and used my tablet with the pen tool and practiced tracing the edges of the circles, dragging the handles on the anchor points, and things like that.

After that, I started experimenting with fill colors and random things, still with simple shapes. I won't lie, the pen tool takes a little while to get used to before you can start feeling comfortable with it. But I don't think it's hard, just kind of scary at first since it's new!

Yeah, I have that problem with a lot of tutorials, haha. I like to draw and sometimes I think I'm alright, but I don't have a lot of experience with a lot of tools like tablets and Photoshop. Though it's my own fault because I run such a retardtastic schedule that I never have time to practice or experiment or anything.

I did this last year, all with the pen tool in Photoshop and my tablet.

Do you have Soulseek? It's mainly a music-trading thing, but I've gotten a couple programs off of it.

Noooooo. Right now my computer is running with a grand total of like... 5 programs on it. I just haven't gotten around to re-installing or downloading anything. I'll look into it, is it fairly reliable and not all like OH WE ARE GOING TO ARREST YOU FOR DOING THIS?

Date: 2008-08-21 02:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] first-seventhe.livejournal.com
Well obviously people use the program to do totally illegal things. Haha! But I've used it for a while, and I haven't had any real problems with it. It isn't full of hackass viruses like Kazaa or anything, at least in my experience. Of course it is use at your own risk, like everything else is.

That is a pretty badass design!

Nah I don't care about that. I'd be worried I said some mean shit about him in older entries...but I kind of doubt it with him. Now if Jason ever got one, we'd both be f'ed. heh.
