She looked surprised, but then her face relaxed. "Nyphi is half-full of snobs. You know, professors who think you're nothing without your certification and your studies. Your certification barely matters, either: it's how many rote can you learn, how many of the chidai can you hit. They rank your worth." She shook her head, silky black hair scattering. "It was ridiculous."

"Why did you stay?" I asked. It was true: uncertified firestarters did make a good living, as long as they had a few references who would testify to a lack of unexplained explosions and unrestrained fireworks.
