set me up with some recs, yo
Oct. 31st, 2012 08:22 pmSo, my friends! I have a PS3. I have had a PS3 for a year. It is the most expensive Netflix-streaming device in the history of electronics. I only own one game for it and that is FFXIII (at least I have beaten that *SHAME FOREVER*). Pretty much
safety_caesars and I use it to watch horrible things on Netflix and the single BluRay that's in this house right now (Sherlock) which isn't even mine and, you know what, this is embarrassing enough. I'll stop.
Anyway. I'm looking for some video game recs for PS3.
I thought about FFXIII-2, but for secret reasons that are secret I am actually looking for something slightly different from Final Fantasy, for next year. However, if you're wondering what kind of games I enjoy (aka: will actually play for more than 4 minutes), the answer is: Final Fantasy type RPGs, and Plants vs Zombies.
I've played Halo and Halo II, but I'm not a huge shooty-type fan -- they were more fun to play with friends, and I like games that are I am exhausted from work and want to stare at a pretty thing and maybe make fire happen type games, not social ones. I adore stuff like Civilization, Age of Empires, Command & Conquer, even SimCity, stuff like that; but most of what I've played has been for computer, and it seems to be a more intuitive way to play those kinds of games? Uhhhhhhhh................ I'M NOT A GAMER, OKAY
But I'd like to have a couple more fun things to dabble in and around. So throw some ideas at me!

Date: 2012-11-01 01:12 am (UTC)The mega-gamer paladin suggests Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom (kind of old one), Folklore (very old one), and Lair (only sort of because he says the gameplay is rough--it's a flyer--DRAGONS).
He also said Skylanders is actually a really awesome, not brain taxing RPG style, that while it's made for younger children, is still adult-enjoyable. Only problem there is all the little monsters you have to physically purchase and collect to play. It's a drag.
If you like hack'n'slash, Dynasty Warriors 4 is pretty good. There are lots of fun characters, and the levels are appropriate levels of hard. Also you can get drunk and do the two player version and you both can pretend you're helping Mulan defeat the Hun army (we have no integrity).
He also says he's sorry that he ditched his old Game Informers because now he can't research this and give you a list guaranteed to offer you "comprehensive enjoyment of your Sony experience."

Date: 2012-11-01 01:13 am (UTC)If you like open world, exploring, let's destroy a thing type games, I highly recommend Prototype, which is set in NYC and yes, you can climb all the buildings. There's a second game that I haven't played yet, so I can't rec that one positively or negatively. Along the same line, I really like Assassin's Creed II. I've played the original and can really only recommend it for the context it'd give you for the second game--the gameplay itself is often broken and needlessly frustrating. The same goes for AC: Revelations. I haven't played AC: Revolutions yet and I only just got my copy of ACIII, so I can't say good or bad things about either of those yet.
LA Noire is a pretty decent mix of the open world and political/rpg type games--bonus: since it's by the same crew that did the GTA games, driving is an exercise in hilarity. I've had to walk away from the TV a few times because I was laughing so hard I was sobbing. No, I don't know why running over a fire hydrant is that funny, but it is.
I would also really really mega-really no-seriously-I-mean-it recommend Journey, which is available as a download (only $10!). I'm not sure what I could say about this game that wouldn't entirely ruin the experience (and it is an experience). It's a short little game, should only take you about an hour to complete a first run through, and will probably make you tear up (unless you're me, in which case you will cry and smile through your tears and promptly start up a second go around). Journey is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played, visually and even though I've played it countless times at this point (no, really, I stopped counting), I still like to pull it up and just explore the game for the sake of looking.
Speaking of downloads, it's possible to download a ton of PS1 games for the PS3--like Chrono Trigger. :D (Which is now available for Android smartphones, what is our life.)
Since you say you're not a fan of shooty games, I'd say stay away from Uncharted (which are great games, but are kind of awkward to play at times). There's a lot of Indiana Jones goodness in it, so it might be worth trying though. (I love Uncharted, I really do, but it does occasionally drive me up a wall.)
I would say stay away from Demon Scrolls, which I picked up because "Yay, Atlus!" but which turned out to be a terrible fucking game, holy shit. Bad, bad design.
Simulation games wise, Sims 3 is available on the PS3! Having only played the console version though, I have no idea how it compares. Command and Conquer is also available!

Skyrim will SUCK YOUR LIFE AWAY. That being said, I also recommend it! It's pretty and you can make flames spout out from your hands while stabbing things. AWESOME

Date: 2012-11-01 02:29 am (UTC)For my recommendations, others have mentioned most of them, but I want to put in a plug for Limbo, a side-scroller that is one of the most unusual and beautiful games I've ever played. It's also a download.

Date: 2012-11-01 09:43 pm (UTC)I forgot to mention Peggle - it's downloadable and fun to play drunk with friends. It's basically if pinball and pool got together and had a drunk baby.
I also want to throw in Little Big Planet, which has great potential for drunk shenanigans plus Stephen Fry narrates everything.

Date: 2012-11-01 11:36 pm (UTC)Oh, on the DAII front, if you play it, be careful, there is a woman at one point who gives out optional quests--apparently some people (self included) have set off a glitch where...uh...they pick her up and place her in their inventory instead of talking to her. ...Since she's not an item, she promptly disappears from your inventory and since you picked her up, she's gone and...so much for those side quests.

Date: 2012-11-01 12:24 pm (UTC)Also, Plants vs Zombies has taken hours of my life and wont give it back. I adore it... and the end song and video makes me lol. Also, your taste in games is excellant. I have played every game you listed and loved them all. The fact you have such excellant taste makes you a gamer so stop saying you're not. Only true gamers play Age of Empires, Command and Conquer and Sims games... that is my opinion anyway. lol.

Date: 2012-11-02 01:15 am (UTC)OTHER THAN THAT, and avoiding FF games: I'll totally second the recs for the Assassin's Creed games, which I love and which are pretty short! Paladin has been playing them for me and sometimes they can be annoyingly finicky, but I really enjoy the games and the writing and all the history that I roll around in; female characters are celebrated and ass-kicking all over; basically it's really awesome.
From watching paladin play Heavy Rain and LA Noire, they looked pretty interesting! certainly strong storylines/writing in a lot of ways, and really well-crafted.
All my other PS3 games are still in shrink-wrap, but yes, Journey was amazing.
