well HELLO FRIENDS????? after MUCH delay which is MY OWN FAULT, i am here to present to you the tiny fandom event of the year: Final Fantasy Kiss Battle 2022!!
This event is open to everyone, even if we aren't DW circlefriends! (feel free to friend me too; i promise i'm not crazy that's a lie but at least i'm sometimes funny). If you aren't on DW, you can still play via anon or OpenID!
The Kiss Battle is simple. Players leave prompts in comments under each specific fandom, using generalized fandom nomenclature: a relationship of some sort, and a concept to inspire other players.
- For romantic relationship kisses, we use X / Y
- For platonic relationship kisses, we use X & Y
- Absolutely open to relationships with more than 2 people involved! X / Y / Z (/ A / B ...) welcome to this party!
- Prompts can be a word, a sentence, an image, a song lyric; it's a suggestion, rather than a request
- it's a kiss battle! there will be smooches!
Players then go looking for smoochin' prompts they'd like to fill. Fills can be fic, art, interpretive dance, whatever you're inspired to; they can be filled in a responding comment, or as a link (to AO3, tumblr, etc). FILLS GOTTA HAVE A KISS IN 'EM. IT'S A KISS BATTLE. What counts as a "kiss" is up to you, though -- you can be creative!
- Fills should use the comment header to let people know what the fill is; please use a format like "X / Y, (title), (rating), (any content warnings that might apply)"
- "Aerith/Tifa, memorial, G"
- "Cloud/Squall, just in time, R (blood)"
- Prompts can be filled multiple times! Don't worry if someone got there first; we love Two Cakes up in this event! The more kisses we get, the better!
- You can fill as anon if you want/need for any reason
- You can of course crosspost anywhere you'd like
It's a very simple game, and is meant to be played in good faith without anybody being a shitbag about pairings or characters. We're all too old for this.
FANDOM LINKS Fandoms with compilations and expansions should fall into their titled macrofandom. For example:
- FFXIII also includes FFXIII-2 and Lightning Returns (FFXIII-3)
- FFX also includes X-2
- FFIV includes the After Years
If you need to specify a certain microfandom / singular canon, please do so in the prompt or in the comment header!

He sees the argument form before Gladiolus swallows it back. He hasn't lost the habit of obedience to not-quite-commands, though he wants to keep going. He shouldn't even be here, should be with their uncrowned king, but he has always been stubborn and today is no different.
They find a niche, shielded well enough by a pillar that gives them excellent sight lines for anything approaching but keeps them hidden from opponents. Gladiolus tends his weapon first, as he should. They don't speak while they eat their travel rations and sip from their canteens. Cor thinks he remembers a stream in the next cave where they'll be able to refill, but he still drinks sparingly.
In a short time, Gladiolus is asleep, head pillowed on his folded jacket, and Cor silently moves beyond the pillar, to the edge of the waiting silence. "Long time no see," he says, the words barely audible to human ears.
The silence fragments into the delicate clatter of beads and the shimmer of steel. Gilgamesh is as Cor remembers him, massive and intimidating. His arm is missing. His face is unreadable behind his mask.
"You return," Gilgamesh says eventually.
"He asked for guidance."
Gilgamesh considers this. "He must face the trial alone."
"Of course."
The silence stretches and thins. Cor has relived this battle in dreams and nightmares for three decades. There is one thing he did not do then, that he has regretted ever since. He moves forward slowly. Gilgamesh watches him, eyes narrow behind the mask.
Close enough to fight, close enough to touch, and Cor grips the shoulder of Gilgamesh's remaining arm and pulls him in. His mask tastes of steel; it is as kissing armor. Cor doesn't care. He has always been drawn to strength.
Gilgamesh does not return the kiss, but neither does he push Cor away. When Cor steps back, the former Shield's stance is different. Less wary.
"You may try that again," Gilgamesh says, "after the trial."
Cor keeps the smile off his face, barely, until the former Shield disappears into the depths of the caves.

Date: 2022-02-27 09:17 pm (UTC)Such lovely ambiguous 'we have unfinished business' here. Definitely love how Cor is all business to start, but clearly is aware that Gilgamesh is lurking about. That Gilgamesh is also claiming to be all business but, well, Gilgamesh not immediately attacking someone, letting Cor close enough to kiss him without so much violence first, says *a lot* doesn't it?

Date: 2022-03-15 03:52 pm (UTC)Everything about Cor and Gilgamesh fascinates me. We never find out if Cor is immortal or if that's just a nickname. (Do we ever find out how he survives the fall of Insomnia, or is that just glossed over like so much in the game?)

Date: 2022-03-14 11:38 pm (UTC)also, He hasn't lost the habit of obedience to not-quite-commands—i kinda love the subtle implication/worldbuilding here. the Kingsguard et al are kind of a funny group, right? ostensibly military/secret service-y, but the way they give and take orders feels more fluid than that, more like a gang or something—so much told and ordered in glances and authoritative vibes and such. (also i wouldn't contradict cor either, lol)

Date: 2022-03-15 03:44 pm (UTC)The Kingsguard seems to have a completely wild first-among-equals/"I do what I want" vibe and the closest analogue I can think of is actually Spectres from Mass Effect, who are basically special forces cops unconstrained by procedure or chain of command (other than like, the Council that "rules" the galaxy for some definitions of those terms); the whole idea if that they pick people who are very very competent and turn them loose without bureaucracy to get in their way. Which obviously is problematic as FUCK and leads to bad actors, but also makes some degree of sense when you need people to operate independently in emergency situations, but also, PROBLEMATIC AS FUCK, and anyway the Kingsguard sure does seem to run around doing whatever they want as long as they're defending Lucis or the King??
