murderstomps into the lecture three days late with starbucks what's UP CHUCKLEFUCKS it's time for your favorite kissy event of the year: Final Fantasy Kiss Battle 2023 is a GOOOOO!

This event is open to everyone, even if we aren't DW circlefriends! (feel free to friend me too; i promise i'm not crazy that's a lie but at least i'm sometimes funny). If you aren't on DW, you can still play via anon or OpenID!

The Kiss Battle is simple. Players leave prompts in comments under each specific fandom, using generalized fandom nomenclature: a relationship of some sort, and a concept to inspire other players.

• For romantic relationship kisses, we use X / Y
• For platonic relationship kisses, we use X & Y
• Absolutely open to relationships with more than 2 people involved! X / Y / Z (/ A / B ...) welcome to this party!
• Prompts can be a word, a sentence, an image, a song lyric; it's a suggestion, rather than a request
• it's a kiss battle! there will be smooches!

Players then go looking for smoochin' prompts they'd like to fill. Fills can be fic, art, interpretive dance, whatever you're inspired to; they can be filled in a responding comment, or as a link (to AO3, tumblr, etc). FILLS GOTTA HAVE A KISS IN 'EM. IT'S A KISS BATTLE. What counts as a "kiss" is up to you, though -- you can be creative!

• Fills should use the comment header to let people know what the fill is; please use a format like "X / Y, (title), (rating), (any content warnings that might apply)"

It's a very simple game, and is meant to be played in good faith without anybody being a shitbag about pairings or characters. We're all too old for this.

FANDOM LINKS Fandoms with compilations and expansions should fall into their titled macrofandom. For example:

Ashe glances down at her regal dress of office, of her lack of weapons or armor.

(Of course, she’s also showing considerably less cleavage than him, so they who can comment on proper arms throw the first stone.)

“This dulls me as much as it does you, I suspect,” Al-Cid continues. “A bit of exercise would do us both good.”

“I did not come here for exercise, your Grace,” Ashe retorts. “I would not linger overlong away from Dalmasca.”

“Consider it in the interest of diplomacy,” he grins.

He has his own training quarters and an expert tutor in swordsmanship, of course. The favoured weapons of Rozzaria are a bit heavier than those in Dalmasca, two-handed swords (like Vossler had favoured) instead of scimitars and rapiers, gleaming morningstars and even flails hung up on the walls. She selects something appropriate to her weight class and reach, politely eschewing any suggestions from Al-Cid’s master of combat.

The rules are simple. First to three. This is still a diplomatic interaction; they’re still locked in conversation, except the words are meted out through glances of steel and footwork.

She gets inside his guard once, twice - he surprises her, but only once - and then a third time. There’s a faint sheen about his brow (he snaps his finger, and his secretary is immediately handing them a handkerchief); but Ashe hasn’t begun to break a sweat.

“If you would be so kind as to honour another of Rozzaria’s traditions.”

Al-Cid bows deeply in his defeat, as unflappable as ever. When he raises, he catches her hand - bringing her blade dangerously close to his throat - and presses a kiss to her knuckles.

He says, “To the victor of this vaulted dialogue, I cede my momentary affections.”

"Of all things," Basch begins, and can't get any further, for his tongue has twisted against the roof of his mouth. The spirits were strong; they linger, making his limbs heavy and his thoughts fuzzy. Outside the tavern - though it cannot truly be called that, as it is merely a hole in the wall with alcohol for sale - he pauses, a hand against the bricks. He puts his free fingers to his forehead.

Balthier stumbles out of the door behind him, staggering into something that still manages to resemble his usual swagger. "Ah, that batch was suspiciously strong. If I didn't know better, I'd suspect the proprietor tampering with it."

"What would the purpose be?" Basch asks. His vision has blurred at the edges. He used to hold his liquor much better than this, but years being a captive tend to eat away at such skills. "Loosening our purse strings further?"

Balthier regards him silently for awhile - too long. Basch does not trust the calculations in that gaze. He is right not to, for not a moment later, before Basch has managed to wrap his hands around the dizzying spirit haze, Balthier crowds him up against the wall. He's fast, far faster than Basch would have guessed after emptying so many goblets.

Balthier presses close, aligning them shoulders to hips. He smells of aftershave and spirits and the spring showers on the plains. "Lighten up, captain; this is a time-honored tradition."

Basch ought to pull away; he doesn't. "A tradition of what - debauchery? Losing terribly at cards?"

"No." Balthier grins. They are so close that Basch can see the skin around his lips pull with the movement. "Of finding our courage in the bottom of a bottle, of course."

He leans in. Basch has a moment to decide, really: a second where he could, in theory, twist out of Balthier's grip to plead too much drink, too sour a stomach. But he doesn't do this, either. Balthier slots their mouths together with a sigh, an exhale that reverberates, and Basch's eyes flutter closed of their own accord.

Balthier sinks against him. He's heavy, but not uncomfortably so. His hair is feather-light and fine when Basch cords his fingers through it. He isn't sure how long they stay that way, huddled against the wall, mapping each other, for once Balthier licks his way between Basch's teeth, the rest of the world goes gloriously hazy.

Eventually, Balthier pulls away. His lips have gone rosy, swollen and worked slick. He smiles - softer this time. "Perhaps a better man would have been able to approach without the spirits."

"A better man wouldn't have lost all our coins at cards," Basch points out, head still spinning.

Balthier's expression opens further in delight. "Ah, yes, but that man would have had enough coin for two rooms at the inn instead of just one, and where would the fun in that be?"
