murderstomps into the lecture three days late with starbucks what's UP CHUCKLEFUCKS it's time for your favorite kissy event of the year: Final Fantasy Kiss Battle 2023 is a GOOOOO!

This event is open to everyone, even if we aren't DW circlefriends! (feel free to friend me too; i promise i'm not crazy that's a lie but at least i'm sometimes funny). If you aren't on DW, you can still play via anon or OpenID!
The Kiss Battle is simple. Players leave prompts in comments under each specific fandom, using generalized fandom nomenclature: a relationship of some sort, and a concept to inspire other players.
- For romantic relationship kisses, we use X / Y
- For platonic relationship kisses, we use X & Y
- Absolutely open to relationships with more than 2 people involved! X / Y / Z (/ A / B ...) welcome to this party!
- Prompts can be a word, a sentence, an image, a song lyric; it's a suggestion, rather than a request
- it's a kiss battle! there will be smooches!
Players then go looking for smoochin' prompts they'd like to fill. Fills can be fic, art, interpretive dance, whatever you're inspired to; they can be filled in a responding comment, or as a link (to AO3, tumblr, etc). FILLS GOTTA HAVE A KISS IN 'EM. IT'S A KISS BATTLE. What counts as a "kiss" is up to you, though -- you can be creative!
- Fills should use the comment header to let people know what the fill is; please use a format like "X / Y, (title), (rating), (any content warnings that might apply)"
- "Eiko & Vivi, friendship, G"
- "Aerith/Tifa, memorial, G"
- "Cloud/Squall, just in time, R (blood)"
- Prompts can be filled multiple times! Don't worry if someone got there first; we love Two Cakes up in this event! The more kisses we get, the better!
- You can fill as anon if you want/need for any reason
- You can of course crosspost anywhere you'd like
It's a very simple game, and is meant to be played in good faith without anybody being a shitbag about pairings or characters. We're all too old for this.
FANDOM LINKS Fandoms with compilations and expansions should fall into their titled macrofandom. For example:
- FFXIII also includes FFXIII-2 and Lightning Returns (FFXIII-3)
- FFX also includes X-2
- FFIV includes the After Years
If you need to specify a certain microfandom / singular canon, please do so in the prompt or in the comment header!

Date: 2023-02-23 03:56 pm (UTC)A Box at the Opera, Setzer/Daryl/Maria, G
Date: 2023-03-16 02:27 am (UTC)Daryl sits, rigidly upright, the sheer silk of her veil adding color to her face where nature has fled. He thinks the scars are beautiful, has told her so with words and kisses in as many ways as he can, but she is nervous around strangers.
Most of the audience has left when Maria walks through the curtained doorway. The heavy makeup has been cold-creamed off and she has changed the stiff brocade and silk of her costume for a lighter dress more suited to the warmth of the spring day outside.
Setzer comes to his feet and bows. "Thank you for accepting our invitation," he says.
Her smile has an edge. "I appreciate that it was an invitation and not a kidnapping."
"Would you believe me if I said I learned the error of my ways?"
"No," she says, "but I prefer this approach."
Daryl makes a sound between a laugh and a cough, and Maria's eyes cut to her. Setzer sees the moment she realizes what the veil covers, and he likes her better for not flinching.
"Would you care to join us for some champagne?" Setzer asks.
Maria glances at the sealed bottles. "I only drink with people whose eyes I can see," she says, though she softens it with a flutter of lashes and a curve of the lips.
Setzer keeps his eyes on Maria. He promised Daryl that it was her choice. She is here, after all, but he is still a bit surprised when she draws back her private curtain and reveals her face, scars and all.
Maria tilts her head, more studious than coquettish, and after a moment she nods. "Thank you," she says. She accepts the glass that Daryl hands her, and sips. It is not as good as what there was before the Light of Judgment, but it is wine and it sparkles, and that is a luxury all its own.
"Why?" Daryl asks her when she lowers the glass.
Maria does not pretend to misunderstand. She's far more clever, Setzer thinks, than the Impresario gives her credit for. "I am required to acknowledge the invitation," she says, "but staying is my choice."
Daryl's lips twist further, pulling at the scars. "And I have not scared you off, then?"
Maria crosses the room and sinks down on the sofa next to Daryl, all draped fabric and flowing hair, close enough that their knees touch. Setzer holds himself very still. He is merely the audience at this moment.
"You wear them for all to see," Maria says simply, her fingertips hovering in the air near Daryl's cheek. "I admire your bravery. I don't have it, myself."
Setzer has said a variation of that to Daryl dozens of times. They all have scars from those days. Only some of them show. He keeps his own locked away, and when they threaten to break free, he takes the Falcon and flies until he can pretend the tears are from the wind.
Daryl says nothing, but she takes Maria's hand in hers, and presses it to her lips. From the color that rises in Maria's face, it is a less innocent gesture than it looks.
The stage lights go off, and the dim glow of the lamps in the box casts long shadows, half hiding them.
Maria turns her hand so that she holds Daryl's instead, and returns the kiss. Setzer is just considering interrupting when she turns to him, her eyes enormous in the shadow. "Will you join us?" she asks, and it seems quite genuine.
"It would be my pleasure."

Date: 2023-03-17 09:29 pm (UTC)Celes/Sabin, after the end, G (suicidality briefly mentioned)
Date: 2023-02-24 06:50 pm (UTC)In some ways it still does. She's never been like him - she was trained to see people as resources, unit numbers, field positions, and that training didn't break until Maranda. But in Tzen, Sabin held up a falling building and waited, like it'd never occurred to him that she wouldn't get involved. He would and did risk his life for a stranger, and assumed she would too. As if he had no concept of not being that dependable, or not being good.
Most days, traveling with him, she doesn't even want to die anymore. That's not something she can tell him, because she can't tell him that she tried. But she tries to pay him back, for the way he's wordlessly taken over foraging and cooking duties, and the way the his huge warm bulk shields her from the wind howling down the Serpent Trench. She builds the fire every evening. She kills or runs off any monsters that get too curious about them. She uses white magic to an extent she would once have considered prodigal - every night healing every trivial bruise or abrasian, every blister, every stiff muscle, for him and herself and (with mixed success) their chocobos.
She mends a cut on his temple, once, and as she withdraws her hand he catches her wrist. "Hey. Don't wear yourself out on this, okay?"
"I need to get back into practice," she says, not quite meeting his eyes. "Anyway - the world is sick. Open wounds risk infection."
"Okay," he says, like he's not convinced, but doesn't know enough to argue. But then he smiles. "Open wounds, sure. But if I keep letting you fix everything else, I'm just gonna get spoiled. I mean - I'm grateful. Really! I just don't want you to... you know..."
He fails to elaborate. She says, "I don't think I do know."
He looks serious. "Celes, you don't have to prove anything to me."
There's nothing she can say to that, or at least, nothing she wants to. After a pause, she says, "I'll start the fire," and he lets go of her hand.
Later, while he's skewering pieces of nondescript lizard meat for roasting, he says, "You don't have to tell me anything you don't want to."
"Did you think that was an imminent danger?" she says, and then stops, wondering if that came out chillier than she meant it. Friendly conversation: another area where she needs to get back in practice.
But he laughs. "Nah, with you, I guess not. I just wanted to say... and this is the only time I'm gonna say it, because I don't wanna pry... I know you've got some stuff going on. And I'm here for you, if you want."
Does he not realize? He's already done more for her than she would expect from anyone, and he does it as easily as breathing. "Thank you," she says.
"Any time." He balances the meat skewers over the fire. It's getting dark, in a streaky orange and purple sunset that would have been rare and beautiful before the world ended. Now it's always like that, and hard not to take as a corruption in the atmosphere.
Maybe it isn't. Or doesn't have to be. "It's a shame," Celes says. Sabin pretends to be fully absorbed in apocalypse cookery, but she can see the flash of his eyes as he glances up at her sidelong. "That it took the end of the world to bring us together."
He says, "I don't think of it like that at all." He looks terribly earnest and, despite two weeks' worth of beard, boyish. "You were one of the people I really wanted to find after the crash." (This list of people, she's certain, was long. He cares about everyone.) "I always liked you. And I still do."
"You're a kind person."
"I try," he says, with a dismissive shrug. "And, I mean" - a strange, crooked, sheepish smile she's never seen from him before - "I hope that's part of it."
She frowns. If kindness is only part, then what...
...All this time she's told herself, He's sticking close to you because you're both safer that way, and because he's nice. But what if - just suppose - he also did it because he wanted to?
"If this is weird, we can forget about it," he says. "No hard feelings."
"No. It's... not weird." Or it's mutually weird. "I had other reasons for treating your injuries."
He laughs. "Y'know, I wondered, once or twice." Seeing her stiffen, he backpedals: "Hey, hey, no, I'm not trying to embarrass you. I'm happy, is all."
Happy, in a time and place like this. He's remarkable. He is, possibly, a good influence.
But there's a faint luminous eyeshine off in the dusk, behind him, and this conversation can't continue until she knows their camp is secure. And maybe she doesn't know how to continue it anyway, without more time to think. She gets up, loosening her sword in its scabbard. He looks where she's looking. "Ah," he says, "yeah, we better deal with that."
"You're busy. I'll be back." She walks around the fire, to where he's sitting. But she pauses before setting off in pursuit. She wonders what it would feel like to...
But why wonder? What's the worst that could happen? The world already ended. She leans down and kisses his forehead. He's warm. Gritty particles of sand from the trench floor are stuck to his skin, and she's sure she's no better. He angles toward her and puts a hand on her hip - and doesn't pull her closer, although he could, and she would let him.
When she steps back, he smiles up at her. "Go get 'em. You know where to find me."

Date: 2023-02-25 08:19 am (UTC)'What's the worst that could happen? The world already ended' is such a good line. And the moment where he could pull her closer but doesn't is very striking.
Really wonderful work. I'm deeply fond of this pairing, and there's so little fanfiction for it!
